Are You Really Working?
One of the main challenges of working at home is that people don't think you are really working. So many people require a
structured environment to do their work that they just don't understand how you can really be working if you are staying at home all day and not punching a clock.
Those of you who do work at home appreciate the freedom of being your own boss, and of working on your own schedule. There are some pitfalls, on the other hand, that can make a home office less productive.
Distractions are the primary curse of real productivity. Go into the kitchen for a cup of coffee, and stop to fold some laundry or
check your sports scores in the newspaper. These simple chores can steal a big chunk of time out of your day and impede your progress.
The best way to have the most productive home office is to have a plan. Maintain a dedicated space for your
office, and establish routines and systems that make your work
flow most easily.
Set boundaries so you will not interrupted. Let everyone in your world know that you are only available for interruptions at certain times; work set times and take breaks
at set times whenever possible. You do have the freedom to set your hours, however, anytime you want, whether at 2 to 6 in the morning, or 2 to 6 in the afternoon.
The key is to be consistent. Set boundaries around your home office that improve your efficiency and help you get your job done in the most productive way. Then go out and play.
