 MusingsMusings  Making Friends

"An organization's ability to learn, and translate that learning into action rapidly, is the ultimate competitive advantage."                -Jack Welch

Among the best ways to learn what your customers want is with a survey.  Just ask them.

There are several ways that you can find out what your customers want. Talking to them while they are in your store is number one.  Be sure that your customer service team is asking how they each heard about your store.  Knowing where your customers have learned about you will help you target your marketing efforts. There are several areas for you to consider when creating your survey; what do you want to learn, who you will connect with, how you will use the information.  Once you have researched all of these areas you have to choose how you will get your information.

      1. Send it snail mail.  Because we get so much less "regular" mail than we have in the past there is a good chance your mail will be opened and not just recycled.  Be sure to pay the return postage or you won't get any response.  Keep in mind, too that this may be a biased audience.  Most already do business with you.

       2. Try social media.  Social media has become a very powerful machine.  A well crafted campaign can generate more response than you may be able to handle.  For tracking purposes (and for your sanity) only post to one outlet at a time.

        3. Direct Mail Marketing on the internet.  This is likely to give you the best results.  Your mailing list is already made up of people who know you, customers; current, past and future.  This method is particularly good for finding out what might bring new people into your business and for learning why someone no longer shops with you.  For as little as $10.00 per month you can instantly find out what is most important to your customers, and what they would like to see from you in the future.  Offering some kind of incentive, like a free eBook, will gain even more responses.

Use what you learn from your surveys to map your future, update your strategies, and add to your success.

Tax TimeClock/calendar

It is now time to gather your receipts and accounts; the dreaded tax time. Have you already spent the big return that you think you will be getting?  Or maybe you are scrambling to pay an anticipated bill.  This could be the last year that you will have to live this nightmare. With just a little bit of adjusting you could owe nothing and get nothing. Coming out even is tview.

Contact your boss or HR manager to change your W4 form  Adjust the number deductions so that the right amount of taxes are withheld; not too much and not too little. There are two benefits to following this system; you will not have to deal with the stress of taxtime, and you are likely to increase your take-home pay.

Check you return carefully.  There are often deductions people miss because they are so weird.  Believe it or not you can deduct the cost of a babysitter as a charitable deduction if you are leaving the house to do charitable/volunteer work.  Unusual deductions like this are lurking everywhere and you are initiated to use any you can find.

We have used Turbo Tax for a number of years and find that it is very good a t finding the hidden deductions.  If you have kept your records in Quicken it will even enter most of your information for you, and remember it for subsequent years.  This is an easy fix, but whatever system you choose be aware that you have lots of choices.  The aim of the game is to come out even.
