National Arts in Education Week
In July 2010, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution declaring the week following the second Sunday of September as National Arts in Education Week. This year it will be the week of September 9-15, 2012. Americans for the Arts will celebrate by hosting their biannual blog salon about arts education topics on ARTSblog. The blog salon will feature about 20 posts by arts and education leaders throughout the week, all discussing the intersection between the arts and the new Common Core State Standards. Music NOTES
The Orange County Youth Symphony Orchestra is the proud recipient of a grant from the Lonie Bosserman Fund, administered by the Orange County Community Foundation, supporting the youth symphony's commitment to scholarship.
The Santa Monica Symphony has announced the suspension of its 2012-13 season due to lack of funds. It hopes to return for the 2013-14 season. Additionally, long-time conductor and music director, Allen Robert Gross, has been discharged of his duties. |
Up & Down THE SCALE
Christian Baldini has been appointed music director of the Camellia Symphony in Sacramento, replacing Allan Pollack. Baldini, a native of Argentina, moved to the United States in 2003 to earn his master's degree in orchestral conducting at Penn State. He has earned several awards for conducting and compositions, including winning the 2006 Sao Paulo Orchestra International Conducting competition. Baldini is also the music director of the UC Davis Symphony.
The Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra has appointed Robert Brophy, viola; Sandy Hughes, flute; Carrie Kennedy, violin II; and Joel Pargman, violin II to its roster. The 2012-13 season marks the first full season with the Orchestra for Brophy, Kennedy and Pargman; and the first time that Hughes has performed with the Chamber Orchestra. Kennedy and Pargman are husband and wife.

Michael Feinstein, the multi-platinum-selling, two-time Emmy and five-time Grammy-nominated entertainer dubbed "The Ambassador of The Great American Songbook," is the newly appointed principal pops conductor of the Pasadena POPS. In addition to his recording and concert career, Michael is an accomplished archivist and television and radio host with his own nationally-broadcast series on PBS and NPR. He has both the deep musical knowledge and charisma to be the face of a prominent POPS orchestra. Feinstein recently performed with the Pasadena POPS at the Los Angeles County Arboretum to a record breaking crowd on July 21; it was Marvin Hamlisch's last concert prior to his sudden passing on August 6, 2012.
Kevin Flint has been appointed director of marketing and audience development at the Santa Barbara Symphony. Kevin has over twenty years of diverse marketing experience, including in the motion picture industry, electronic and print advertising and mail order/ecommerce. GG Arts Law is the new name of Brian Taylor Goldstein's law firm, (formerly FTM Arts Law).
Former ACSO Board member Jeff Haydon is stepping down as executive director of the Ojai Music Festival to accept a new appointment as CEO of the Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts just outside of Manhattan. Jeff has served as executive director of the Festival since 2003.
Long Beach Symphony Orchestra (LBSO) executive director and ACSO Board member, Robert (Bob) C. Jones, will leave his position effective September 30 to return to his home in Maryland. Jones joined LBSO as a consultant in 2009 and as executive director in 2010. He has led the board and staff in eliminating accumulated deficits and alleviating its cash-flow crisis while working to instill confidence and build community support for the Orchestra. Jones has worked tirelessly to raise funds for the LBSO along with successfully negotiating the musicians' union contract and reorganizing LBSO's business operations to work more efficiently and effectively. Bob and his wife Susan will be joining a growing arts management firm, Chesapeake International Artists.
Farkhad Khudyev has been appointe d music director and conductor of Youth Music Monterey County. Khudyev recently completed his graduate degree in conducting at Yale University and conducted the New Jersey Intergenerational Orchestra. He also serves as principal guest conductor of the National Orchestra of Ashgabat in his native Turkmenistan.
Kelly Cornell Weichbrod has been named director of development for the Santa Barbara Symphony.She has held positions with the Laguna Art Museum, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and the Contemporary Museum of Baltimore. Most recently she was the associate director of development for the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Cal State University, Fullerton.
Cindi Young has been appointed executive director of the Hutchins Consort. Ms. Young most recently worked as marketing and development director at Musica Angelica Baroque Orchestra and also worked for 18 years with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, eight years as executive assistant to the late Ernest Fleischmann. She continued to partner with Fleischmann in his international arts management firm, specializing in artistic searches and the marketing and management of music festivals. Thereafter, Ms. Young became endowment campaign coordinator for the Santa Barbara Chamber Orchestra, where she continued as development director before leaving to produce marketing and public relations programs for Orange County non-profits with Young Company Creative Marketing Communications.

Good News
In early 2013, construction will begin on a $64-million performance hall on the campus of Chapman University in Orange County. The hall is expected to be completed in 2015 and will house 1,050 seats. Los Angeles' Pfeiffer Partners Architects has designed the building and Acoustician Yasuhisa Toyota, who also worked on Walt Disney Hall has been hired.
