Know You PIN

Illinois property owners will have to know their property index number (PIN) when completing their personal income tax form this year, if they are requesting a property tax credit. After listing the total amount of Illinois property tax paid during tax year for real estate (Section 4A), taxpayers will be asked to provide their PIN number. This number can be found on your assessment notice or tax bill. You can view your property tax billon the County website.

You can also find your PIN by visiting the County's website and clicking on "Know Your PIN" under Quick Links, and then entering your address.

Lake County Budget is Balanced

The economic crisis has impacted local governments everywhere. Lake County faced a multi-million dollar budget shortfall for 2010 due to lost revenue from property tax growth on new development, as well as declines in sales and business taxes. We are also facing budget challenges due to the lack of State funding for certain services. Even in the face of these extraordinary economic times, we have closed our budget gap while preserving services. We have a balanced 2010 budget and the state of Lake County is currently secure. Getting here was not easy. Budget planning began early in the year and we worked with employees and departments to implement cost-saving strategies, including:

  • Cuts in spending for all departments
  • Not filling vacant positions
  • Not budgeting wage increases
  • Renegotiating vendor contracts
  • Reducing staff and laying off employees in areas with reduced workload

Lake County has been able to sustain its fiscal stability because the Board's philosophy has always been: don't spend money we don't have. We've saved money by paying for things using cash rather than accumulating debt. We are already planning now for the 2011 budget. Even as the economy improves, the County anticipates a slow recovery in revenues because of the lag time in many of the County's funding sources.

Only 29% of the county budget comes from property taxes.
While you write your entire property tax bill to the Lake County Collector, Lake County keeps only 7% . The rest is distributed to  231 other taxing districts in the county, with the schools getting the biggest piece. For a home valued a $ 250,000, only $346 goes of the property tax bill goes to fund county government.

You can view the budget at www.lakecountyil.gov and watch the State of the County address.
Senior Citizen Tax Deferral Application Deadline February 26

Even though we had great difficulties in receiving the funds from the State of Illinois for the 2008 tax payments, we have been guaranteed that this program will continue.

The Senior Citizens Tax Deferral program is a State of Illinois program that is managed by the County Treasurer's Office.  It is a state loan that actually pays your county property tax at a 6% simple interest rate.

A lien is placed on the property and repayment takes place upon death or sale of the home.  The owner must be a least 65 years old as of June 1st of the tax year claimed and a household income of $50,000.00 or less.  The property cannot be income producing, such as a rental.  You must provide proof of current house insurance and property taxes must be current at the time of application.

Those that have a current mortgage, second mortgage or reverse mortgage, must check with their lending institution to see if they qualify.

A new application is needed each year.

For additional information or questions, please feel free to call our office at 847-377-2323, or check on line at www.lakecountyil.gov/treasurer/propertytaxrelief.
