Important New Drivers Law in the State of Illinois

Many new laws take effect January 1, 2010.  I have heard from many of you about the lack of safety when people use electronic devices while driving, so I know you will be interested to learn of these new laws.

The Illinois Text Messaging Ban
According to the new law:
"A person may not operate a motor vehicle on a roadway while using an electronic communication device to compose, send, or read an electronic message."

The law defines an electronic message as:
"Electronic message" includes, but is not limited to electronic mail, a text message, an instant message, or a command or request to access an Internet site."

ON JANUARY 1, 2010, IT WILL BE ILLEGAL  (in the State of Illinois) to:
     *   Send or read a text message while your car is in traffic, unless fully stopped due to a blocked roadway (such as a train crossing).  A stop sign or stop light does NOT waive this restriction.  You must place the car in park or neutral gear, or pull over to the side of the road and stop.

     *   Use a cell phone in a SCHOOL or CONSTRUCTION zone without the use of a hands-free device.  In other words, you cannot HOLD the cell phone while using it.  You must use a device (such as a Bluetooth headset or ear bud) which allows you to keep both hands on the wheel.  To use such a device you must have a compatible phone  and must purchase and install the hands-free device itself.   Contact your cellular provider for specific information about products and services
available for your cell phone.

Fines for violation of these laws will start at $75.00, with higher fines expected for the most serious infractions.  Obviously, no fine can ever compensate for injuries or loss of life.

The law does NOT apply to use of a navigation device, such as a GPS system.

Agreements with RTA and Pace Provide Paratransit Option to Northwest Lake County

News Release
New Weekday Curb-to-Curb Demonstration Service will Drive People from their Homes to Metra Stations
Residents living in northwest Lake County will now have the option of taking paratransit transportation to the local Metra station thanks to funding provided by the Lake County government, Regional Transportation Authority and Pace. Paratransit, or Dial-a-Ride, is an alternative mode of flexible passenger transportation that does not follow fixed routes or schedules. The service is often used by individuals with disabilities, or the elderly, who are unable to use fixed route transportation systems.

Trips for this demonstration project must begin and end within Antioch, Avon, Grant or Lake Villa Townships with the exception of the Prairie Crossing Metra stations. This service gives priority to people with disabilities but is open to the general public. Rider registration is required for this service and riders can register through their respective township of residence.

Lake County, Pace and local officials will welcome the first riders to the Prairie Crossing Metra North Central Service Station in Libertyville (2401 Harris Road, Libertyville) with a ribbon cutting event on Monday, January 11, at 6:45 a.m.

This Dial-A-Ride service will operate Monday through Friday with service hours to accommodate trains departing from the Prairie Crossing Metra stations for Chicago around 7 a.m. and trains returning to the Prairie Crossing Metra stations from Chicago around 6:45 p.m. The service will also travel to CLC for requested rides and will operate as a typical Dial-A-Ride during midday hours.

Service begins on January 11 and reservations can be made beginning on January 8. To call for a ride, please contact the Northwest Lake Call Center at 1.800.201.6446. One-way cash fare is $1 for people with disabilities and seniors and $2 all others.

Ride requests need to be scheduled one day in advance and are set-up on a first come first served basis.

The Northwest Lake County Demonstration Project is sponsored by Antioch, Avon, Grant and Lake Villa Townships, along with staff assistance from the Lake County Coordinated Transportation Services Committee, Lake County and Pace. The LCCTSC is a group comprised of government, non-profit agency, and citizen representatives that have been working to improve paratransit services in Lake County.

This demonstration project is funded, in part, with a grant from the Regional Transportation Authority through the Federal Transit Administration Section 5317 New Freedom Grant with matching funds from Lake County and Pace.

What to do During a Power Outage

REPORTING AN OUTAGE

As you know, you can report an outage by calling 1-800-Edison-1.  Also, most of us don't have Internet access when our power is out.  In case you do, you can click here to report an outage

You can also sign up for free text messages to alert you when:
  • An outage has been reported and estimated restore time
  • A crew is enroute to repair and estimated restore time
  • A crew is on site to repair service and estimated restore time
According to the Com Ed website, you will ONLY receive text messages when there is an outage and will not receive promotional text messages.

FINDING OUT WHAT WENT WRONG

To find out why your power went out, you can visit:

SUBMITTING A CLAIM FOR DAMAGES DUE TO A POWER OUTAGE

The Illinois Public Utilities Act calls for ComEd customers to be eligible to get compensated for damages caused by power outages that:
  • Are due to ComEd's negligence; and
  • Affect more than 30,000 customers; and
  • Continue at least four hours; and
  • Result in the transmission of power of less than 50 percent.
Outages that are due to bad weather or customer tampering are exempt.

If you are a victim of a power outage or surge that fits this criteria, you can fill out a ComEd claim form.

Honor Flight Chicago

The American veteran is one of our greatest treasures...those men EagleFlagand women who answered our nation's call, especially at times of our greatest need. Honor Flight Chicago's mission is to honor and thank those veterans - especially now our WWII veterans by bringing them to Washington DC, at no cost to them, for a day of honor.

Would you like to join Honor Flight Chicago as they treat these humble, unassuming men and women to a most extraordinary day? Volunteer to help with flight logistics or become a guardian to safeguard our vets on their flight day. The cost is roughly $500 per veteran to go to Washington. Donate with your time or resources to help send as many vets as we can. There are an estimated 25,000 WWII veterans in the Chicagoland area - we'd like to reach every one. We invite you to view our documentary narrated by Gary Sinise and see what we are all about.

I have received a lot of questions about recycling batteries. Here are some sites that give you additional options.
