Millennium Trail Clearing Work at
Grand Avenue |

The Lake County Forest Preserve District is continuing to expand our system of regional trails to connect forest preserves with surrounding communities. We appreciate the overwhelming support that voters and preserve visitors have consistently shown for creating more trails for walking and bicycling.
One such project will extend the Forest Preserve District's Millennium Trail by creating a connection from Rollins Savanna Forest Preserve northward through Fourth Lake Forest Preserve to Bonner Heritage Farm and McDonald Woods Forest Preserve. This 2.5-mile section of gravel trail will feature a scenic route through woodlands and wetlands with safe crossings at Rollins Road and Grand Avenue by way of either a bridge or tunnel. We have just begun engineering work on this section, and are planning for construction of the trail to begin in 2010, followed by construction of the road crossings in 2011 or 2112. A map of the proposed trail route is enclosed for your review.
In the coming months, engineers, surveyors and other consultants will occasionally be working outdoors on the trail section from the south side of Rollins Road to the north side of Grand Avenue through part of Fourth Lake Forest Preserve. You may see people staking the locations of the future trail route and road crossings. On the northeast side of Grand Avenue, we also will need to clear some areas of non-native buckthorn shrubs and other invasive species to allow for land surveyors to complete their work.
If you have any questions regarding the planned trail, please contact Jeff Sloot, Project Manager at 847-968-3277 or jsloots@lchpd.org. |

County Receives Federal Funding for
Route 120 |
The Federal Highway Administration Surface Transportation Priorities Act included $600,000 towards a Phase I Engineering Study and design of the highway improvement. When it is finished the Central Lake Thruway will be a four-lane arterial highway with limited access and a seven mile by-pass segment. Lake County Board Chairman Suzi Schmidt said, "Our federal legislators know how important this project is for the quality of life of our residents. I want to thank them for their efforts in bringing this money to Lake County." Local elected officials first identified the Illinois Route 120 transportation corridor as a priority at the September 2005 Transportation Summit. Since that time the Route 120 Corridor Planning Council has studied and reviewed options regarding the character and future alignment of the road, and collected input at two public meetings, prior to making a final decision. The Route 120 Corridor Planning Council Governance Board voted in October to approve a unified vision for the future of the Illinois Route 120 transportation corridor. The Governance Board is comprised of mayors and county board members representing municipalities and districts located within ½-mile of the corridor. "It has been a four-year long process to build local consensus around future improvements to this heavily congested east-west state highway that crosses central Lake County," said Diana O'Kelly, Governance Board Vice-Chair and County Board District 10 Representative. "I am grateful that our federal legislators have recognized the importance of this achievement. This funding will go a long way towards helping us complete the initial engineering but a lot more work needs to be done." The funding will be 100% federal and will not require a 20% local match as is customary. More information is available at www.120now.com. |
