The national and local shortage of vaccine for H1N1 continues. Lake County Health Department does not have more vaccine for public clinics.  However, our Health Department is working with local physicians to get vaccine to them.  Many Pediatric and Obstetric offices now have a partial supply of vaccine.  Be aware that the H1N1 vaccine comes in different forms, so your pediatrician may not have vaccine for the age of your child.  We are also working with doctors who have adult patients at high risk.  These would include adults ages 24-64 with chronic conditions.  Physicians must be registered with the State of Illinois in order to give vaccines.  Not all physicians are registered with the state.
 
H1N1 Clinics in other Counties.
Cook County is allocated 84% of the vaccine the state receives (the State of Illinois gets a little over 3% of the national supply of vaccine).  You may get vaccinated in other counties. Cook County is taking appointments.  There is a
schedule of H1N1 Clinics in Suburban Cook County.

In addition, McHenry county has a limited number of appointments available on Sunday November 29.  I have heard that it is best to call the number listed, instead of trying to register on-line.  Check on line for availability.

I want to assure you that I send out general emails to everyone on my list at the same time as soon as I get the information.  I know a number of you were frustrated that the Highland Park Clinic was filled so quickly.  Comcast email users should be aware that there has been a problem with the delivery of emails.  Some have been up to 4 days late.  We are trying to get this problem fixed.

Helpful H1N1 Information

 
Practice Healthy Habits
 
In addition to getting your seasonal flu shot, help prevent the spread of flu in the workplace, schools and throughout the community by:
  • Staying home if you are sick
  • Covering your cough and sneeze
  • Washing your hands frequently

Additional important items to remember about flu include:
 
Overall, people are most contagious during the first three days of illness, so staying home during this time is especially important to not spread the flu to coworkers, friends or fellow students.
  • People with flu-like symptoms should stay home from school, work and social gatherings until 24 hours after resolution of their fever (less than 100 F) without fever reducing medications.
  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that children 9 and younger receive two doses of 2009 H1N1 vaccine, which should be separated by one month. One dose is recommended for everyone else.
