Educational Programs Make Florida Pre-History Come to Life!

American Lion Skull

Have you been looking for something unique to offer your students and members?  Is the cost of travel limiting your field trip options?

Our Fossil Discovery Hour is more cost effective than a field trip, but can be just as much fun, not to mention a lot easier to organize!

The Fossil Discovery Hour is a fun and educational exploration of our planet's prehistory with emphasis on local fossils and geology. This program is for all ages.

What We Do in an Hour...

1.  Mini Fossil Dig:
Students uncover prehistoric treasure including shark teeth, fish, stingray and many other fossils.

Always very popular, our dig consists of searching through fossil-laden gravel from the Bone Valley region of Florida.

Participants get an identification sheet and a paper-plate load of gravel in which they can find numerous fossils including shark teeth, bones, stingray spines and teeth and many other remains of ancient sea life.

We circulate around the room and help them identify what they find. Best of all whatever they find is theirs to keep!  All materials and clean-up are supplied by Paleo Discoveries.

2.  Fossil "Show and Tell"/Q&A

You could say we bring the "museum" to you! We have an extensive array of real (most of which were found on our tours) and  reproduction fossils  that we bring to your facility. Participants can touch and hold many of these fossils which include Mammoth and Mastodon teeth, Sabertooth cat and American Lion skulls, giant shark teeth, T-Rex, Velociraptor fossils, whale, dolphin, petrified wood and more!

We'll discuss the animals as we present the fossils and always encourage questions.

How much does it cost?

Prices for the Fossil Discovery Hour are $200-300 for the first program (price varies based on distance and number of participants).  Subsequent programs the same day at the same facility are discounted to $150-200.  Maximum group size is 50.  References always available

Megalodon Shark tooth

Fossil of the Month
The Megalodon Shark

A favorite fossil among many collectors, the Megalodon shark lived primarily in warm coastal waters worldwide from 3 to 20 million years ago.
Tips of broken teeth imbedded in fossil whale bone along with scar marks from teeth are evidence of it's preferred prey. Megalodon sharks are estimated to have grown to approximately 60 ft. and their fossil teeth range up to 7-1/2 inches in length. For comparison, a very large great white shark today might reach 18 ft. and have 2-1/2" teeth.
In it's day, Megalodon was the dominant super-predator of the oceans.
Fossil teeth of Megalodon are highly sought after, especially in good condition. While most examples are valued under $500,  premium  teeth of extremely large sizes sometimes command values as high as $20,000.  Happy hunting!

Go on a Fossil-Hunting Expedition!

We recognize the rising costs of travel and insurance along with budget cuts are affecting your ability to run field trips.  So we're working with schools throughout Florida to design field trips that can work.

E-mail or call (772) 539-7005 to discuss your needs and we will work with you to make it happen!

Spend a Day with us on the River...

Imagine bringing your students on a Fossil-Hunting Expedition that allows your class to explore Florida's pre-historic past.  Digging and sifting gravel from the beds of shallow-water rivers is an easy and time- tested way to find a variety of fossils, all of which are yours to keep!

We'll help you find and identify fossils of animals such as sharks, whales, dolphins, stingrays and fish. In addition to the abundant marine fossils, there are more recent ice-age land-mammal fossils to be found from animals such as saber-tooth cat, mammoth, mastodon, horse, camel,  jaguar, sloth, bison, giant bear-sized beavers, 7 ft. armadillos and more. You are guaranteed to go home with additions to your collection (or to start a new one!)

Anyone with enthusiasm to discover and learn while exploring the really old Florida is cordially invited!

These tours are suitable for large groups and schools who would like to introduce their students to Florida history and paleontology.

Where do we go?

Our Fossil-Hunting tours generally take place on the Peace River in the towns of Arcadia, Zolfo Springs and Wauchula. These locations are approximately 45 min. to 1 hr from the Bradenton, Sarasota and Venice areas. In north Florida, Gainesville is another location for our expeditions. Transportation is not supplied. Tours generally start at 9:30 AM and run until 3:30 or 4. Times can be modified for large groups.

Where do we meet?

We usually meet at a pre-arranged location near the river. Directions will be provided by Paleo Discoveries.

How much does it cost?

Schools and other organizations are eligible for special group rates (minimum 10 participants) at significantly lower prices than we normally charge. Savings of 40-50% off our usual fees of $45. for children and $75. for adults are typical, depending on group size.

What do we wear and bring?

Shorts and a t-shirt are fine to wear. What you'll want to bring are lunch and drinks (a small cooler is great), water shoes or old sneakers and a change of clothes and a towel for after the tour.  Wading boots and flip-flops are not recommended. Also, don't forget sunblock, sunglasses and a hat- you're outdoors in Florida sunshine.
