Now is the Time for Community Investing
August 2011

Greetings!

We hope you are keeping cool in this record summer heat and rocky economic climate!  At Contact Fund we've been turning up the heat on deal pipeline development as part of our commitment to raise and deploy $1mm in new loans in 2011, which we announced earlier this year. This September, we are raising the second round of investment capital toward our goal, and believe we can exceed it!

Contact Fund has held several promising conversations with community development organizations and enterprises including a microfinance institution looking for expansion capital to open a new branch in the Bronx and an affordable housing developer looking for capital to help purchase foreclosed homes in Queens for their rehab-homeownership program. A new area of focus is the emerging world of food systems and the opportunity to provide increased access to healthy food, particularly important in low-income communities. Read more about healthy food financing here.

Given the volatility in the financial markets and limited investment opportunities, now is the time to consider investing in New York City neighborhoods. We invite you to consider joining the Contact Fund investor community and discover the many ways you can channel private capital into healthy food access and other community and economic development opportunities in New York City. Please email us for an updated Private Placement Memorandum for our September round of investment notes or contact me directly at mark@contactfund.com or 212-209-3877 for more information.

Clearly, we are living in challenging times.  These times also present a strong need for flexible, mission-oriented capital to help finance organizations that are both committed to improving conditions for vulnerable populations and strong enough to repay investments.

With best wishes for a relaxing and enjoyable August,

Investor Insights - Investing in Food

GreenNYC cart We have seen the healthy food access issue area become of increasing interest in the private impact investing world as well as the public financing realm.

Personally, outside of Contact Fund, I am a seed investor in Corbin Hill Road Farm, an upstate farm using a community supported agriculture (CSA) model of farming to provide affordable farm shares to the neediest Bronx communities.  Check out this profile of Corbin Hill Road Farm in the NY Daily News last month.

I also recently participated in an event in Brooklyn hosted by Slow Money, a food systems investing movement gaining national traction.
