February 2012

Message from Dean Neeli Bendapudi

Greetings:

I hope 2012 is off to a successful start for you and your student. I had the pleasure of participating in my first graduation ceremony as dean in December, and seeing smiles from students, parents and other loved ones reminded me of how grateful I am to serve you as dean of a truly great institution.

But don't take my word for it.

Our accounting undergraduate program was ranked 17th nationally and 7th among public universities in Bloomberg Businessweek's 2011 rankings of business schools.

U.S. News and World Report's 2012 "Best Colleges" ranked our undergraduate program among the top 12 percent of public business schools across the country.

The Princeton Review included KU and our MBA program in "The Best 294 Business Schools of 2012."

KU is a fantastic place to learn. I am grateful that your student chose to learn and grow with us.

Sincerely,

Neeli Bendapudi

Dean

School unveils new professional mentorship program

The Business Career Services Center is excited for the launch of a new mentoring program open to all undergraduate and graduate students within the school.  The new program, kicking off this spring, is designed to bring students and business professional together for increased career exploration and overall professional development as students prepare for life after college.

Mentors will be paired with students based on shared professional interests, career history and the mentee's post-graduation goals.  Students will be given opportunities to engage in regular communication and an annual face-to-face meeting with their mentors to create a successful relationship.

"Career guidance is one of the most important components of a business education," Dean Neeli Bendapudi said. "Students need networking opportunities to help them be successful once they leave the university. A business mentorship program will connect current students with our impressive body of graduates. We take considerable pride in our more than 25,000 active alumni. Business Jayhawks are changing the world and their advice and experience will give current students the direction and confidence."

If your student would be interested in participating in this new mentoring program, please encourage him or her to visit the BCSC in room 125, Summerfield Hall to pick up an application form.  We will be accepting applications from students until February 24, 2012.

Also, if you or any of your colleagues in business are interested in mentoring a KU business student, you may sign up online via our KU mentor form.

Student Academic Services reminds parents of upcoming deadlines

Spring semester is in full swing here in the Student & Academic Services office.

This is the perfect time for your student to be visiting our office to work on extensive plans for graduation, study abroad, summer school, or to talk about the upcoming semester's classes before main advising begins. To schedule an appointment with an academic advisor, please have your student contact our front desk at 785-864-7500.

Main advising will begin after spring break. During this time, all admitted students must meet with an academic advisor to get their advising hold released. Please remind your students that appointment slots fill up quickly during this time, so getting in early will work in their advantage.

As always, feel free to contact our office at 785-864-7500 to answer any questions. We look forward to working with your student this semester.

Study abroad opportunities and scholarships

In addition to longstanding programs at Groupe ESC Clermont-Ferrand, France and CIMBA in Italy, the School has built partnerships with two universities in China (Sun Yat-Sen University and the University of International Business and Economics); one in Germany (European Business School); and one in Costa Rica (The University of Costa Rica).

The school is implementing an exchange relationship with Masaryk University in Brno, Czech Republic.  These partnerships facilitate the exchange of students and offer KU business students the opportunity to study abroad for a semester or year.

Business school scholarships are available for students participating in exchange programs, as well as other programs worldwide. Because of scholarship support available for students studying abroad at partner institutions, the cost per semester abroad can be the same or even less than a semester at KU.
