Sept. 2011

Message from the Dean:

During Hawk Week, I had the pleasure of meeting many of our students as they came to campus for the Fall semester. My new role as dean began at the end of July, so I was eager for the Fall semester to begin. I felt like I was ready to host a party and just waiting for the guests to arrive. Now they are here and the semester is off to a great start. This week the School is hosting a "Welcome Back" tent at Summerfield Hall, to give students and faculty a chance to mingle.

Having earned my doctoral degree from the School of Business, I am already a Jayhawk. However, I told the students who entered the School this semester that they will hold a special place for me, as we start our journey together.

I will share with you some of the advice I have given our students:

  • KU and the School of Business will offer you a wealth of opportunities for learning, but it is your responsibility to take charge of your education.
  • Select one or two extra-curricular activities in which you really want to be involved. Try new things, but don't spread yourself too thin.
  • Each semester, get to know at least one of your professors personally.

As an alumna of the KU School of Business, I believe I received a world-class education. As a parent myself, I understand the trust you place in KU and the School of Business when you send your sons and daughters here. Please be assured we will work to provide the same kind of world-class education for our students today. Their success is our success.

Thank you for your interest in receiving "On the Same Page." We also invite you to follow us on Facebook or Twitter.

As I have told our students, my office door is open to each of them and I extend the invitation to you.

Thank you again for choosing KU for your child's education.

Sincerely,

Neeli Bendapudi

Dean

Fall arrives at the Business Career Services Center

The Business Career Services Center (BCSC) has once again planned a semester of events and activities to assist your student in their internship or full-time job search. Many businesses view the Fall semester as their primary opportunity to recruit students who will be graduating in May or looking for a summer internship. It is imperative that students engage with the BCSC as early as possible. We offer many different types of programs for students: resume reviews, interview practice, networking opportunities and other professional development opportunities. All of these are important for your student as they enter this critical period of their job search. Our calendar of these events and programs can be found on our website. We hope you will encourage your student to participate in as many BCSC activities as possible.

Much of this preparatory work leads to the signature event for the BCSC, our Business Career Fair on Sept. 15, 2011. Here students can interact with more than 90 different companies from a wide variety of industries. Students can then find, review and apply to these companies within KU Career Connections (KU's online job website). For companies choosing to interview on campus, these interviews will begin on October 3rd.

In addition to our events, the BCSC has created a career development plan for students to ensure they are meeting certain career-oriented milestones as they progress through school. This plan can be found on our website.

Student and Academic Services

Greetings from the University of Kansas School of Business Student and Academic Services Office.

The Fall 2011 semester has just begun, but students are already extremely busy with a variety of activities and class assignments.

The KU School of Business admitted an exciting new group of 215 students this semester (average GPA of 3.23) through competitive admission. We are very excited to be working with such high caliber students.  Additionally, we admitted 78 incoming freshmen directly to the KU School of Business from high school.  Freshman admission was established this year for students with at least a 28 ACT (or 1260 SAT) and 3.25 or higher GPA in high school.  A benefit of being admitted as a freshman is access to School resources and elimination of  the competitive admission process.  Program requirements are the same for both freshman admitted and pre-business students.

The KU School of Business is currently taking applications for Spring 2012 admission.  All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply by September 15th, 2011.  More information can be found at here.

All students (business and pre-business) will have an advising hold on their enrollment and will receive an email reminder regarding the hold in early September.  Students must meet with an academic advisor to have their advising hold removed from their record. This is to ensure a timely graduation. Business and pre-business students can make an advising appointment in the Student and Academic Services office by calling 785-864-7500 or visiting our office, 206 Summerfield Hall.

Best of luck to your student as they begin their fall 2011 semester; we are here to help if you or your student have any questions.

International Opportunities

Our Institute for International Business provides scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students going abroad on short-term programs and on summer or semester-long programs.  The deadline for scholarship applications is May 1 for Summer or Fall 2011 programs.

The School of Business has partnerships with many international schools including two universities in China: Sun Yat Sen University in Guangzhou and the University of International Business and Economics in Beijing.  Several business students have studied at these schools, have had great experiences, and are able to offer their future employers something that is in demand - experience in China.

In January, a group of 22 undergraduate and graduate students participated in a study abroad program to India led by business faculty member Kissan Joseph.  The same program will be offered again. Tentative dates are December 27 to January 16. There will be an information session for students in early October about the 2011 India Winter Break Study Abroad program.

Students who are interested in study abroad programs or scholarships should contact IIB Director Carol Rose, at crose@ku.edu.
