April 2011

Memo from the Dean:

Neeli Bendapudi, a 1994 KU School of Business Ph.D. graduate, has been selected to be the School's new dean when I step down this summer.

I'm confident Bendapudi's great passion for KU and bold ideas for the future make her a great fit to continue the School's progress for many years to come.

Bendapudi, who most recently worked as a professor of marketing at Ohio State University, comes to the School as an accomplished teacher, researcher, networker and fundraiser. Her talents will undoubtedly help students learn more, access cutting-edge information, earn jobs when they graduate, and add value to their degrees.

It's been a pleasure serving your students as the School's dean, and I look forward to working with them more when I return to the School's faculty in spring 2012.

A career fair that's 'just in time'

The School's Business Career Services Center, in collaboration with the KU Career Services Alliance, will host the Just-in-Time Career Fair on April 28 from 1:30 - 4:30 p.m. in the Kansas Union. This event is specifically designed for students who are still looking for a full-time position or internship. The employers attending are required to have open positions within our KU Career Connections system at the time of the fair, so students can be assured that all employers present are looking to hire.

Now in its third year, the event has seen great employment results because of the direct contact students get with employers at the fair. For students who do not have employment already secured, this is an event that should be considered a "must-attend," as it will be the last formal opportunity of the school year to connect with companies specifically looking to hire students.

Information regarding the event, including a list of companies that have signed up, can be found here.

Student and Academic Services

Summer options

Many students work, participate in experiential learning opportunities like internships, or take courses during the summer break. The School of Business offers a range of classes during the summer, such as pre-admission, accounting and finance courses. Students can also take general education requirements during the summer. Call the Student & Academic Services office to find out what courses are offered by the School of Business and go here to see what the University offers.

Taking courses at a community college is also a viable option. However, the SAS encourages students to double check that their courses will transfer before taking courses outside of KU. Students can double check here. And don't forget, grades for transfer courses must be a "C" or higher to satisfy requirements.

Numbers and dates

The School had another talented group of students apply to the School this semester and the SAS admitted 274 out of the 331 students who applied. That's almost an 83 percent acceptance rate. The average professional GPA, which is based off business and economics courses, of the admitted students was 3.24.

Students who will be graduating in December 2011 should have completed a graduation check with the SAS office during this semester's advising appointments. However, if they have not, please encourage them to call (785) 864-7500 or email bschoolundergrad@ku.edu to set up an appointment.

Finally, summer and fall 2011 enrollment is currently underway. Students must meet with an advisor before enrolling. Please remind them to do so if they haven't already.

International Opportunities

The Institute for International Business in the School of Business provides scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students going abroad on short-term programs and on summer or semester-long programs.  The deadline for scholarship applications is May 1 for summer or fall 2011 programs.

The School of Business has partnerships with many international schools including two universities in China: Sun Yat Sen University in Guangzhou and the University of International Business and Economics in Beijing.  Several business students have studied at these schools and have had great experiences and are able to offer their future employers something that is in demand - experience in China.

This past Winter Break, a group of 22 undergraduate and graduate students participated in a study abroad program to India led by business faculty member Kissan Joseph.  Next year, the same program will be offered. Tentative dates are Dec. 27 to Jan. 16. There will be an information session for students in early October about the 2011 India Winter Break Study Abroad program.

Students who are interested in study abroad programs or scholarships should contact IIB Director Carol Rose, at crose@ku.edu.

Summer in Kansas City

The KU School of Business now has an undergraduate presence at the KU Edwards Campus in Overland Park. For students who commute from Johnson County or spend the summer in or near the Greater Kansas City area, useful coursework is available at the Edwards Campus. The difference is Edwards Campus classes meet later in the day and less frequently: once weekly during the fall and spring semesters, and two-to-four times weekly during the summer, between 4 and 10 p.m.

For parents and other non-traditional students seeking a return to school, the Edwards Campus and School of Business now feature a new degree-completion program, the Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA).  Designed for students who juggle careers and family life but wish to complete a KU business degree, the BBA offers a program that might be a good fit for would-be students who can't otherwise commute to Lawrence for daytime classes.

To discuss Edwards Campus options with an academic advisor, please contact Chris Claussen at 913-897-8419 or claussen@ku.eduVisit the Edwards Campus online.
