Memo from the Dean:
Our students have a distinct advantage when they graduate and transition into the professional world because we give them countless opportunities to gain real-world experience in and out of the classroom. Last semester, undergraduate students in the Small Business Management and Entrepreneurial Marketing classes presented business consulting plans to real-world companies like Pieroguys Pierogies LLC, 1800GotJunk, Computer Assessment Learning from Kansas, and Gluten Free Beer from Colorado. This hands-on work with real-world companies gave students a feel for what they can expect when they go into the professional world, and also provided them with experience they can put on their resumes. The classes' work was so applicable to the professional world that it garnered news coverage from Fox 4 News in Kansas City. Click here to watch the news story. Real-world experience is just one reason our students are well-equipped to graduate and have success in whatever professional field they choose. Rock Chalk, Jayhawk! - Bill Fuerst

Business in more than one place
The KU School of Business now has an undergraduate presence at the KU Edwards Campus in Overland Park. For students who commute from Johnson County or spend the summer in or near Johnson County or the greater Kansas City metro area, useful coursework is available at the Edwards Campus. The difference is Edwards Campus classes meet later in the day and less frequently: once weekly during the fall and spring semesters and two to four times weekly during the summer, between 4 and 10 p.m.
Classes offered at the Edwards Campus support general education and elective options; minors in business, psychology, English, and public administration; and possible business electives. For a preview of the classes offered at the Edwards Campus, visit
classes.ku.edu, click "more options," and search by "Edwards Campus."
To discuss Edwards Campus options with an academic advisor, please contact Chris Claussen at (913) 897-8419 or

Student and Academic Services
The spring 2011 semester is in full swing and students are extremely busy with a variety of assignments. There are more than 2,000 pre-business students currently enrolled in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. If they have met the minimum requirements for fall admission, they are able to apply to the School of Business up until Feb. 15. All candidates currently meeting the minimum 2.5 GPA requirement who have completed the six pre-admission courses and have earned 60 hours by the end of the spring 2011 semester are strongly encouraged to apply. Apply here. We are no longer requiring students to submit ACT scores for admission. Please encourage students to call the KU School of Business Student and Academic Services at (785) 864-7500 or stop by 206 Summerfield Hall if they have questions about admission and their candidacy.
There are 1,098 undergraduate business students enrolled at the School. All business students must meet with an academic advisor before they enroll in the upcoming semester. In order to encourage this, students will have advising holds placed on their enrollment until they meet with an advisor. If your student plans on graduating in spring 2011 or summer 2011, they're encouraged to set up a graduation-check appointment.
Best of luck to your students in the spring. We are here to help if you or your students have questions.

Business Career Services Center
Although the spring semester is just beginning, the recruiting period for many internships and full-time opportunities are coming to an end. Companies began promoting their opportunities for students and soon-to-be graduates as early as last fall and are now hoping to finalize their candidate pools, begin interviewing, and make decisions well before the end of this semester. However, it's not too late for your students to be looking for career opportunities. If you have juniors who will need internships this summer, or if you have graduating seniors who need that first entry-level position, they can find assistance at KU Career Connections. If your students have not connected to the KU CC system yet, they need to come to the Business Career Services Center in 125 Summerfield Hall to sign up for access. During this job search period, students can use a variety of services available through the Business Career Services Center. Those include individual appointments for resume reviews, career advising, job offer evaluations, company discussions, and anything else related to their employment future. We have relationships with many area, regional, and national companies and are always happy to talk with students about those companies, their opportunities, and whether they match the student's career goals. We also have events and workshops designed to address certain issues related to the job search. One in particular is our student job club, a small-group program that brings students together once a week for six weeks during the semester. Participating students are encouraged to discuss their individual job search experiences, frustrations, and questions with their peers and BCSC career professionals at the meetings. Interested students should stop by or call the BCSC for details. The BCSC's goal is to help each student reach his or her career goals. We invited students to work with us. If you have any questions about the BCSC, the services offered, or are looking to hire students for an internship or full-time position, please contact the BCSC at bcsc@ku.edu or (785) 864-5591.
