Memo from the Dean:
We're gladly welcoming spring to
Lawrence here at the KU School of Business! The semester is in
full swing and this academic year will soon be over. More than 450
Business School undergrads will take their well-earned "walk
down the Hill" as they embark on their various careers. We realize
the job market is a challenging one these days and we encourage all students
to remain involved with the Business Career Services Center. BCSC
can provide assistance before, during and after the job search process.
Our advisors are also here to assist
students in planning their academic careers, including during the summer.
Encourage your student to get to know his or her advisor and develop a good
working relationship, the same for faculty and staff.
We talk to students all the time about networking. Mastering
the KU experience is no different.
Finally, please check out our site
specifically for parents of our B-School students. We welcome your questions and comments
and want you to feel like you are a part of the KU family as well.
Happy Spring!
Rock Chalk, Jayhawk! - Bill Fuerst
Dean of the
School of Business

Student and Academic Services
Spring is officially here. It's the time of year when
students are planning for summer and fall 2010 courses. During main advising, we meet with students
to discuss their current classes, reflect on their academic and career goals
and choose next semester's courses. All Business students have an advising hold each semester, so it is mandatory that
they come into our office and meet with an advisor. We are also more than happy to visit with
pre-Business students. If your student
needs to schedule an appointment, please have them contact our office at
785-864-7500 or stop by 206 Summerfield Hall.

Business Career Services Center (BCSC)
The Business Career Services Center, in collaboration
with all of the other career centers on campus, will be holding a "Just-In-Time
Career Fair" on April 29 from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the Kansas Union.
This unique event is specifically designed to bring together students looking
for internships or full-time positions with companies that are actively hiring
for these roles. This event is the final opportunity of the school year
for students to meet with a variety of interested employers. Any student
looking for work is strongly encouraged to attend. Click HERE
to see the current list of employers signed up and be sure to check back as
employers are added.
The BCSC also wants to remind students that they should
be checking KU Career Connections at least once a week for employment
opportunities. Every week we get additional companies contacting us and
posting new positions within our system. These opportunities are
specifically targeted toward students, which makes this a very valuable
resource for students during their job/internship search.

Summer Experiences for Your Student
Summer break is fast approaching. It's
not too late to encourage your college student to make the most of summer. After all, their colleagues (and
future competition) will be using the summer to gain professional experience. Summer
internships can become an enjoyable and productive way to develop professional
skills.
1.
Is your student coming home for the
summer? If so, they can save valuable resources
on food and rent and earn some money.
Things for your student to keep in mind when defining a good job or
internship: Is it good pay? Is it good
for the resume? Is it good for the
skills they can bring back to KU? Many
summer jobs or internships will not be all of these things, but we encourage you to help your student make the right internship decision.
2.
Is your student staying in Lawrence for the
summer? Job openings on or near campus
may provide many opportunities. Encourage him or her to ask the same questions
about Lawrence internships.
3.
Are there volunteer opportunities
for your student? Many volunteer
opportunities exist - some just take exploration. Your student can seek out an experience in their
hometown, in Lawrence or somewhere new.
Check out the Center for Community Outreach at www.cco.ku.edu to find volunteer opportunities where your student will be.
Volunteer opportunities are limitless and look great on a resume.
4.
Is your student interested in
conducting research or taking summer business classes? Many faculty members conduct research during
the summer and are looking for research assistants. For research opportunities at KU, check out www.kucareerhawk.com. If research is not something your student
wants to do over the summer, why not encourage him or her to get some academic credit
during the summer and take a course or two; doing so may alleviate heavy course loads
in future semesters.
5.
Is your student interested in studying
abroad? This can be a great way to
develop international business skills in a particular area of the world and help
students develop independence through eye-opening experiences. There are many study/travel abroad opportunities
available at www.studyabroad.ku.edu.
Advanced planning and initiative can make the summer a
great part of your student's college experience. Happy Summer!
