KU Campus View
Memo from the Dean:
In spite of the wintry conditions here at KU, which by the way makes for some great photos of the KU campus, the spring semester is underway and heating up! The spring semester always seems to go by quickly. I saw a university e-mail recently announcing to students that there were only 30 some class days until spring break. The KU campus is even prettier in the spring, so if you haven't been to campus then, we hope you will be able to do so this year.  Any time you are on campus, please come to Summerfield Hall and stop by the Dean's Office. We'd enjoy meeting and talking with you.

As we all know, almost every state in the country is facing budget challenges, and like many public universities, KU has had to deal with budget reductions as a result of the financial difficulties the state of Kansas has been and continues to confront.

You might be interested to know something about how the School of Business has managed the budget reductions imposed on us over the past two years.  Let me assure you the School of Business is moving forward in spite of these tough economic times and budget cuts. I also can assure you that the educational experiences your sons and daughters are receiving, both in the classroom and in the real-world learning opportunities we provide, are active and operating successfully.  Have we tightened our belts? You bet!  Are we letting budget reductions slow us down? Absolutely not!

During the past two years, the School of Business has addressed total budget reductions of approximately $1 million. We've made these reductions by looking strategically at all of the School's activities, and asking our staff, both academic and administrative, to make reductions in their areas of responsibility. Although we haven't imposed "across the board" reductions, almost every function within the School is now operating on a reduced budget. We also have developed tentative plans to address further reductions should such be forthcoming.

Just to give you some context for the magnitude of these reductions, the School's total operating budget for the current fiscal year is $17.4 million.  Of this amount, 85 percent is allocated to faculty and staff salaries.  We have eliminated a few staff positions that were vacant, and have otherwise made strategic decisions that would have the least impact on our academic programs. The School's funding sources are general fee allocations from KU, the course fees paid by business students, and proceeds from financial support provided to the School by our business alumni and other friends through their contributions to the KU Endowment Association.

We trust your sons and daughters are enjoying their college experience at KU and in the School of Business.  We're confident that they will graduate with a very valuable business degree from a highly regarded School.  And you have our pledge that we're working diligently at scheduling courses so they can graduate in a timely manner.

Student and Academic Services News
The spring 2010 semester is under way and the Student & Academic Services (SAS) Office is eagerly preparing for another round of applicants to the School of Business for the fall 2010 semester. Applications are due on Monday, Feb. 15, 2010 at 5:00 p.m. CDT. The application includes the online form found on the KU School of Business Web site as well as the submission of a professional resume uploaded via Career Connections.  Access to Career Connections  must be at the students' request from the Business Career Services Center in 125 Summerfield Hall or the University Career Center in 110 Burge Union.  Pre-business students planning to apply for the 2010 fall semester must complete all pre-admission requirements by the close of the 2010 spring semester.

Business students that are nearing graduation in May 2010 should have completed an official graduation check in the SAS Office last semester. If your student is graduating in May 2010 and has not completed an official graduation check, please encourage them to call 785-864-7500 to set up an appointment to do so. Applications for Degrees (AFDs) are due to the Registrar's Office no later than March 1, 2010, for the 2010 spring graduation.

We are already meeting business and pre-business students for summer and fall 2010 schedule planning. All business and pre-business students will have a hold on their enrollment until they meet with an advisor, so the sooner they schedule an appointment, the better! Please encourage your student to plan ahead for 2010 summer and fall enrollment by calling the SAS Office or stopping by 206 Summerfield to make an appointment. Waiting until the last minute could result in delayed enrollment.
Business Career Services Center
Every year, KU School of Business students participate in internships in a variety of industries at locations all over the world.  Internships offer many benefits to students, such as a taste of the real world or a test run with a company or industry that they are interested in working for after graduation.  However, no matter what the reasons are for getting an internship, they can all be sure that the experience will greatly enhance their resumes and their employment chances down the line.  A study released in October 2009 by the National Association for Colleges & Employers found that students that had participated in an internship during college had a distinct advantage in obtaining a job offer at the time of graduation compared to those students that did not have an internship.  Such advantages are critical during periods of reduced entry-level hiring, like we are seeing in today's job market.
International Opportunities

The School of Business, through the Institute of International Business (IIB), makes scholarship funds available for undergraduates participating in study abroad programs.  These scholarships are available for any recognized study abroad program except for the Italy program in Paderno, which is funded separately.  Priority is given to students going abroad for a semester or more, to students enrolling in programs that include foreign language learning, and for programs taking place in emerging economies.  The deadline for scholarship applications for students going abroad in summer or fall 2010 is March 1.  Last spring IIB awarded $12,000 in scholarships for undergraduates studying abroad in Brazil, China, France, Germany, Japan, Korea and Spain.
