KU Campus View
Memo from the Dean:

We begin another great year at the KU School of Business!  With this quarterly email we hope to keep parents of our Business and pre-Business students connected to the School and "on the same page" as their student.  We believe that you, as a parent, are one of the most valuable resources for your student.

As we began the new semester, we were excited to learn that KU School of Business' undergraduate program advanced to 28th in the country among public institutions, according to recent U.S. News & World Report rankings.

Over the past few years, the KU School of Business has developed very good momentum that has been generated by the outstanding quality of our students, faculty and staff and the excellent programs we offer. This year's ranking places the KU School of Business among the very best business schools in the country, and this is exactly what we've been working to achieve.

We thank you, as parents, for entrusting us with the growth of your student.  We welcome them as a part of the School of Business family and hope your student has a great fall semester!

A Career Planning Course for Parents
    by Sally Kersley
    (Courtesy of National Association of Colleges and Employers)

Your son or daughter just left for (or returned to) college but doesn't seem to have a clue as to what he or she wants to major in, let alone choose as a career. Don't worry! This is not unusual, although you might wish your student had a little more sense of direction!
Choosing a career is a process students (and adults!) need to go through-and students go through the stages of this process at different rates of speed. The steps include:
  1. assessing skills, interests, and abilities (this is an important first step to choosing an appropriate career);
  2. exploring majors and career options;
  3. experimenting with possible career options; and
  4. organizing and conducting a job or graduate school search.

You can assist and support your students in each of these stages.  But what can - or should - you do?

Business Career Services Center
The Business Career Services Center (BCSC) has once again prepared a full semester of events and programming to assist your son or daughter in their search for an internship or full-time job.  Many businesses view the Fall Semester as their primary opportunity to find and hire students who will be graduating the following May or looking for a summer internship.  Therefore it is imperative that students engage with the BCSC as soon as they get back on campus so that they can get in front of all the hiring companies in this tight job market.  We offer many different types of programs that range from resume reviews, to interview practice, to networking opportunities.  All of these are important for your son or daughter as they enter this critical period in their job search.

Much of this preparatory work leads to the signature event for the BCSC, our Business Career Fair on September 17, 2009.  Here students can interact with close to 100 different companies from a wide variety of industries.  Students can then find, review, and apply to these companies within KU Career Connections (KU's online jobsite).  For companies choosing to interview on campus, these interviews will begin on October 1st.

Our calendar of events and programs can be found on our website at www.business.ku.edu/bcsc-careermonth.  We hope you will encourage your son or daughter to participate in as many of these events as possible since it has been shown to improve their chances of finding work.
International Corner
The KU School of Business recognizes the tremendous value of study abroad for our students, both for their personal development and in their future business careers.  Funds are set aside each year to help undergraduates who wish to go abroad on one of the many programs offered through KU.

During the past academic year, the School awarded $20,000 in study abroad scholarships to 17 Business students who attended programs in Brazil, China, Costa Rica, Chile, Japan, Korea, and Spain.  These scholarships, awarded through the Institute for International Business, are open to Business students in good standing, with priority given to students going abroad for a semester or more; programs that include foreign language study; and programs taking place in emerging economies.
