Student & Academic Services News

Greetings from the Business School Student and Academic Services Office!

The Spring 2009 semester is in full swing and already our students are enrolling in their Summer and Fall 2009 courses. All business students and most pre-business students have an advising hold on their enrollment and were sent an email reminder regarding the hold in early February. That means students must meet with an advisor, then their advising hold will be removed from their record. This is to ensure a timely graduation. Business and pre-business students must make an appointment in the School of Business Student and Academic Services office by calling 785-864-7500, or stopping by our office in 206 Summerfield Hall.

Business Career Services Center Event
The Business Career Services Center (BCSC), in collaboration with the KU Career Services Alliance(www.careerservices.ku.edu), has planned a Just-in-Time Career Fair for April 30th from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Kansas Union.  This event is specifically designed for those students who are still looking for a full-time position or internship.  The employers attending are required to have open positions within our KU Career Connections system at the time of the fair, so students can be assured that everyone present is looking to hire!

This is the first event of its kind on the campus of the University of Kansas and we are excited about its potential to help students during these tough economic times.  For students who do not have employment already secured, this is an event that should be considered a "must-attend" as it will be the last formal opportunity of the school year to connect with companies specifically looking to hire KU students.

Information regarding the event, including a list of companies that have signed up, can be found at: http://www.business.ku.edu/bcsc-careerfairstudents.
International Business News
The Institute for International Business (IIB) in the School of Business provides scholarships for study abroad.  Scholarship awards are based on academic achievement;  in addition, preference is given to 1)  students going abroad for a semester or more;  2)  programs that include foreign language study; and 3) programs taking place in emerging economies.  Awards were made this academic year to 15 undergraduates participating in study abroad programs in Brazil, China, Costa Rica, Germany, Japan, Mexico, South Korea, and Spain.   Application deadlines are March 1 (for summer and fall programs) and October 1 (for spring programs).  Students should contact Carol Rose, Director, IIB, for information, crose@ku.edu, or (785) 864-4583.

There are some excellent new opportunities for study abroad in China at our partner institutions, the University of International Business and Economics (UIBE) in Beijing, and Sun Yat-Sen University (SYSU) in Guanghzhou.  To help launch these new exchange programs, IIB is offering scholarships of $4000 to qualified KU Business students who spend a semester at either SYSU or UIBE.  Business classes are taught in English and Chinese classes are also provided.  With the scholarship assistance, the cost of studying in China will be approximately the same as a semester at KU.  This could be a great resume builder as well as a terrific opportunity for personal growth.  Please contact Carol Rose for further information.
How to get involved as a parent

Build it and they will come...home again for the summer...

As the academic year winds down, your son or daughter may be headed home for the summer.  Excited?  Nervous?  Worried?  Relieved?  All of these feelings are perfectly normal and are to be expected.  Your college student is probably experiencing the very same feelings in anticipation of returning to the nest for the summer.  It's important for both of you to talk honestly prior to arrival about each of your expectations for the summer break, since each of you may have very different expectations of how time will be spent.  Your college student may want to relax, sleep, take it easy, catch up with old friends and keep the same schedule as they did when they were at KU.  You may want them to have summer employment or an internship, assist with household responsibilities, take care of younger siblings and fit into the same schedule they did prior to leaving home.  It's easy to see how conflict can occur.  The most important thing is to listen to each other and find some common ground.
