Memo from the Dean:
Welcome to the second edition of On the Same Page. In this issue, we bring you more valuable tips to keep you up-to-date on your son or daughter's education. We know that as a parent, you are interested in the many opportunities available to our students and we want to keep you apprised of them as the school year progresses. It's been an exciting semester so far. The Business Career Services Center held a successful Career Fair in September. Over 100 organizations attended and we were pleased that so many of our students took the opportunity to meet with recruiters. Over 900 people attended our Chandler Lecture, including many students, and our December Graduation Ceremony is fast approaching. If your son or daughter is graduating this semester, you can link to information on the ceremony at the top of this newsletter under "Upcoming Event." Our faculty and staff work hard to ensure that all of our students receive a top-notch education. Our courses are aimed at giving students the information they need to have successful futures. A good example of this is our "personal finance" course, Finance 101. This course, first offered last semester, teaches students how to manage their personal finances, including how to use credit cards, plan for a mortgage and save for retirement. Enrollment in the course has more than doubled since last semester! Thank you for reading this issue of On the Same Page. We enjoy the opportunity to communicate directly with parents. Your involvement is crucial in the success of our students and we welcome the opportunity to keep you informed of the many resources available to your son or daughter here at the KU School of Business. Sincerely, William L. Fuerst Dean

Business Career Services Center
Interested but not Invasive
The Business Career Services Center (BCSC) wants all business students to have every advantage possible when it comes to finding and getting an internship or full-time job. And while meeting with the BCSC during their job search creates an obvious advantage for students, a less obvious one can come from including parents in this process.
Parents can assist with networking opportunities, career guidance and offer evaluation. However, parents can become too involved in this process and actually hurt their student's job prospects.

Undergraduate Business Council
Pre-Business Information Fair hosted by UBC
On November 6, the School of Business Undergraduate Business Council (UBC) hosted a Pre-Business Information Fair to attract and inform pre-business students. As a student-run organization, the UBC recognizes the importance of communicating with freshmen and sophomores who might be interested in a business education. A tent was set up near Summerfield Hall and representatives from all School of Business clubs were available to talk with KU freshmen and sophomores who stopped by. Read more>>> |

How to get involved as a parent
Teaching Your College Student Financial Responsibility One of the most valuable skills you can teach your child is how to manage his or her funds responsibly. Hopefully you seized the opportunity to discuss financial expectations with your student prior to their departure to KU. This not only includes how long they expect to be in college, but also spending habits and money management. If that discussion never happened, it's not too late!
A new course offered by the School of Business, Finance 101, also teaches students how to manage personal finances including credit cards and loans.
NOTE: Most college students are not financially responsible enough to have a credit card. Debit cards usually have a spending limit and are a better choice.
During college, continue to have open (and calm) discussions about money and the way it's spent. Earning spending money during school breaks and summers may encourage students to be more cautious with their spending habits. The ultimate financial goal is reaching graduation with as little debt as possible.

KU Resource for Student Success
College students engage in writing during most of their college career and beyond. Student writers feel more comfortable with their writing when they find support, feedback, samples and answers to their questions. The KU Writing Center has a wealth of resources with the student writer in mind. Resources offered to students include in-person and online consultations, assignment planning, frequently asked questions and writing guides.
