| Dear Volunteers, |
| April is National Volunteer Month - The time of year throughout the country that volunteers are recognized and celebrated - We celebrate you... the amazing volunteers of Sahuaro Girl Scout Council.
The theme for National Volunteer Month is: Honoring the people who dedicate themselves to taking action and solving problems in the community. Girl Scout leaders take action everyday by being role models and mentors to thousands of girls in our jurisdiction. Leaders also inspire girls to take action and solve problems in our communities. Together Girl Scout Leaders and Girl Scouts effect change. Southern Arizona is truly a better place because of you! The Council staff is committed to providing leaders with the support you need to carry out your role as mentor and facilitator for Girl Scouts. We want your volunteer work to be rewarding to you and make a difference in your lives. To that end you will see a wide array of volunteer enrichment programs and partnerships in the months to come. We believe our partnership with the YWCA will afford you life-changing opportunities that will support your personal and professional goals.
As women and men concerned about and dedicated to the future of girls, you each deserve our heartfelt thanks and appreciation. Together we are building our future leaders and along the way our lives are being fulfilled
Yours in Girl Scouting, Debbie Rich COO |

| Get Involved: Global Youth Service Day 2009 |
| Global Youth Service Day is fast approaching and we have amazing projects for you to get in on! GYSD is the LARGEST service event in the WORLD! Imagine what a difference we could make if we mobilize all of our girls on one day with one common goal!
There are several events you can participate in. The first is the Service Scavenger Challenge download flyer. Each troop will get an envelope with about 5 tasks, all service projects. You will need to complete 3 projects to complete the challenge. Examples of projects are pulling up buffel grass, removing graffiti, harvesting grapefruit for refugees, cleaning up a park, or performing a random act of kindness. We will provide each troop with a disposable camera to document the day. When you have completed your tasks, meet us at Himmel Park and turn everything in. From noon to 4:00 pm there is a Tucson Youth Week Celebration at Himmel Park to recognize the hard work that you all did on Global Youth Service Day! Everyone will get a certificate of recognition and there will be food, entertainment and tons of booths to explore! You will need to provide your own drivers in accordance with Safety-Wise. Spread the word around your school or work and bring brothers and sisters who are ready to work!
The next project you can choose is the Juicing Jamboree. Work alongside teens from Tucson's refugee populations to juice some grapefruit and make marmalade! This is an excellent opportunity for anyone working on their Travel badges or Around the World badges because you will get to spend time with wonderful people from around the world. You will also learn how to make marmalade and grapefruit juice for the refugees. We also have a 26-minute video about the lives of the refugees in Tucson and some other interesting facts. You might also learn some words from several different languages!(Download flyer.)
The third project you can select is picking grapefruit and cleaning up orchards for next year's crops. This involves picking grapefruit off of trees at various locations around town, pulling out dead wood from the trees, raking the area and doing any other upkeep work that the orchards require. Harvesters are also welcome and encouraged to come to the Tucson Youth Week Celebration at Himmel Park!
If you can't make it out for one of the projects, your troop can collect toiletry items for the refugees on behalf of Tucson Refugee Ministries. These populations are trying to recreate their lives in Tucson on very limited funds so basic items like toothbrushes, shampoo, soap, toothpaste, etc. are extremely helpful for them! Your troop can also donate a Mother's Day Basket. You can include bath salts, scrubs, towels, etc. A package a diapers is often an unaffordable necessity you can also include. This would be a great project for troops that are not located in the Tucson area, like Yuma. You can collect your items in Yuma and we will find the appropriate local places to get them to!
All juicing and harvesting activities are in support of Tucson's 15 refugee populations through the Iskash*taa Refugee Harvesting Network. There will be refugee youth and families working alongside our girls during all of the events. If you are interested, you can view a 26-minute video about our refugee populations that gives some history and even teaches you some words in their languages. Any of these projects are great if your girls are interested in working on their travel patches or around the world patches!
Please join us in celebrating Global Youth Service Day and interacting with our refugee populations, most of whom have never heard of Girl Scouting. Projects are available for online registration through E-council. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to contact Kristi by e-mail at kpallack@gmail.com or call 520-419-4646. |
