Ben's Bells recognizes people who go out of their way to show kindness to each other. | The Partnership of Women and Girls |
|

Sahuaro Girl Scout Council has joined together with the YWCA and Emerge! Center Against Domestic Abuse to form The Partnership for Women and Girls. The purpose of the partnership is to raise awareness of the needs of women and girls throughout our community. Together the three organizations provide a continuum of life skill services for girls and women of all ages.
The YWCA, Sahuaro Girl Scouts and Emerge! Center Against Domestic Abuse have identified a synergy and partnership that strengthens the continuum of services, maximizing resources and spanning the generations - girls to women!
Over the last year we have been building an interdependent network that allows each organization to do what it does best while being interdependent on each other:
- YWCA - providing opportunities for leadership and economic and financial education, training for young girls and
providing employment skills training for women in the community and women leaving abusive situations
- Sahuaro Girl Scouts - providing opportunities for girls of all ages to learn, grow, develop leadership skills and give back to our community in a variety of settings, including when they are healing from domestic abuse
- Emerge! Center Against Domestic Abuse - providing a safe place and support services for women and girls of all ages to heal from abuse and violence in their lives and homes and build a life free from abuse
This is a natural partnership! The synergy of the agencies was evident to Journal Broadcasting when they selected the partnership as their community partner for February 2009. Throughout the month of February, the two Journal Broadcasting television stations and four radio stations aired PSAs emphasizing the incredible power of women and girls and the dynamic work being done by the three agencies. In an effort to make the partnership visible and easy to understand by the community the PSAs will announced a new Web site that the agencies have launched ... please visit www.thepartnershipforwomenandgirls.org to learn about the partnership and read Maria's story about how the three agencies helped to change her life!
I WILL STOP DOMESTIC VIOLENCE... I WILL DO AWAY WITH POVERTY... I WILL HELP BUILD CONFIDENCE... I WILL CREATE REWARDING CAREERS... I HAVE THE WILL... WILL YOU? |

Now in the Final Stretch! We are approaching the end of our cookie sale, and we want to get the word out to the public that there is still time to buy more cookies! Council is still receiving a high volume of calls requesting cookies; as the community is craving our cookies, we highly encourage girls to continue going door-to-door, participating in cookie booths and reaching out to more customers! In addition, it has been recently announced that Daisy troops are now allowed to sell at booths and door-to-door. (Please refer the Troop Cookie Manual for safety guidelines.) If you are interested in participating in additional booths, there are still booth sites available; please contact either Kristen Hernandez or Kim Maine for scheduling.
The 2009 Cookie Challenge!!! Let the game begin! Sahuaro Girl Scout Council is close to achieving our Council-wide goal of selling 767,000 boxes. We are calling on all of our goal-achieving girls to join in the Cookie Challenge! The challenge is for Daisies to Juniors to sell 26 additional boxes and Cadettes to Ambassadors to sell 30 additional boxes. These sales have to be from February 14th or later and must be done individually; booth sales will not be considered. For further information on the Cookie Challenge, please contact your Service Unit Cookie Manager or Kristen Hernandez at the number above.
A Few Words About Cookie Dough Cookie Dough is like cash in that it may be used to make purchases or pay fees for Council events or activities. One Cookie Dough is equal to the value of one dollar ($1.00). Credits can be used: · To purchase any item sold at the Council Shop. · To pay fees for Council-sponsored programs including summer camp. · To pay fees for national Destination programs. · To pay expenses related to Silver and approved Gold Award projects.
When Cookie Dough Credits are used toward some of the programs or camps listed in the 2009 Spring and Summer Camp Program Brochure, the value of the credits doubles! Please check brochure for designated camps. This is a girl incentive and should be used by girls and parents only!
Troop Cookie Credits In addition to the troop/group proceeds earned on each package during the program, an additional 10¢ per package is earned by the troop in the form of Cookie Credits. Troops can use Cookie Credits to spring register their troop for the 2009-2010 Girl Scout year. These credits may be applied toward the purchase of pins, badges, and other items sold at the Council Shop, or they may be applied toward the payment of fees for Council-sponsored events and troop/group camping at Whispering Pines Program Center or the Hacienda Program Center. Credits MAY NOT be used for gift certificates nor used by individual girls. Cookie Credits will be kept on file at the Council Shop and will be available for use starting on May 1, 2009.
Troop Proceeds from the Cookie Program Troops should budget a portion of their cookie proceeds as start up monies for the fall. Many troops have mentioned that they do not have the financial support of the girls' parents and have a hard time getting monies when needed. Now is the time to plan ahead! Money management for the troop is an important lesson for Girl Scouts to learn and should involve girls at the appropriate age levels. If you have any questions or concerns call Kristen at 520-319-3172 or 1-800-331-6782 ext. 3172. |

| Get Involved: Global Youth Service Day 2009 |
Global Youth Service Day (GYSD) is an annual global event that highlights and celebrates the contributions of youth to their communities through volunteer service. During Global Youth Service Day, youth around the world organize community service projects to address the needs of their local communities through service, to be recognized for their contributions, and to be a part of a global youth service movement.
GYSD is held during a weekend every April. In 2009, the event will be April 24-26. GYSD is celebrated in over 100 countries in every region of the world.
This year, we have a great opportunity to mobilize as many Girl Scouts as possible on this day. We have teamed up with the Iskash*taa Refugee Harvesting Network to do a number of awesome service projects! We will be having a Juicing Jamboree and will work along-side refugees from all over the world picking grapefruit and juicing them! We will also be making sit-upons with their youth and learning and teaching games from all over the world.
In addition to working directly with the refugees on Global Youth Service Day, we will also be collecting toiletries to make care packages and we will be delivering those on that day as well.
We would love to have as many Girl Scouts and adult volunteers participate as possible! You can participate in one of our Council-sponsored service projects or your service unit can plan your own project to do on this weekend. If you will be planning your own GYSD service project, please send the details of your project to Kristi at kpallack@gmail.com .
April 25th is also the kick off for Tucson Youth Week and there will be a Youth Recognition Event at Himmel Park from noon to 3:00 pm for all those participating in Global Youth Service Day projects.
If you would like more information about Global Youth Service Day, Council Service Projects or information about planning your own service project, please contact Kristi at 419-4646 or e-mail her at kpallack@gmail.com . | |
