Signing Event Held by Troop 2981
On September 6, 2008, Girl Scout Troop 2981, along with the help of Denise Trimble Smith, Sign Language teacher at Tucson High School and Marcy Albert from the Arizona School for the Deaf and Blind, held a Signing Friends Ice Cream Social for all Girl Scout levels. 278 girls attended.
At this event there was no talking. Girls learned how a deaf person can receive a phone call and what is needed to become an interpreter and a sign language teacher. The girls learned the alphabet, numbers, food, days, time, family, greetings and animals. They even learned the Girl Scout Pledge and Promise. They also enjoyed the ice cream and many assorted toppings. The girls earned the Signing Friends Badges, Try-Its and Interest Project patches.
Look for this event again in April.
Girl Scouts Earn Religious Awards
On September 13, 2008 Girl Scout Troop 2981 had several girls receive their Catholic Religious Awards at the Bishop's Mass.
The I live my Faith was awarded to Paige Kimble and Elizabeth McCormick. The Marion Medal was awarded to Leigh Kimble. The Spirit Alive Medal was earned by Chelsea Carter.
Troop 216 Cooks at the Ronald McDonald House On November 29, 2008, Troop 216 visited the Ronald McDonald House and cooked for the residents. The girls also donated 17.31 pounds of pop tabs to the house. They had the privilege of putting them straight into the recycling bin! The girls had a great time at this event.
Brownie Troop 1569 Donates Toys to New Beginnings in Casa Grande Troop 1569 came together and held a used toy drive. The girls donated toys they were no longer playing with or just wanted someone else to enjoy. Toys were donated to New Beginnings which has just opened up a women's and children's shelter in Casa Grande. The girls completely stuffed the New Beginnings van! Great job girls!

| Girl Scout Book Drive for Needy Families |
| As part of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day celebrations, Sahuaro Girl Scout Council is partnering with the Youth Now Collaboration, Americorps, and the Southern Arizona Volunteer Center to host a Book Drive! The Book Drive will began November 24 and culminates on January 16, 2009 in time to deliver books to needy families on January 19, 2009.
The Book Drive will help fight illiteracy as part of the three evils: Poverty, War and Racism. Illiteracy leads to poverty and we hope to fight it by donating as many books as possible to families that cannot afford to buy their own. Books will also be donated to the new Bookmans Low Lounge and a new library at the Food Bank's Marana Youth Farm. Please bring any books collected by your troops to the Resource Center and drop them in one of the available boxes. Donated books do not have to be children's books! We can trade any books we collect for age and subject appropriate books at Bookmans before we deliver them to families.
If you have any questions please contact Kristi Pallack at 520-419-4646. |
