|
Remember! You can designate Sahuaro Girl Scout Council through your employee giving program. Just write us in and watch the difference your workplace giving contributions make for our girls! Days of Caring 2008 Hundreds of volunteers converged on your three Girl Scout properties on September 24 for Days of Caring 2008. Volunteers completed projects that included painting the Resource Center in preparation for the construction of the new Bookmans Low Lounge. The colors are hip and contemporary. The Hacienda Program Center was transformed! Volunteers cleared weeds, painted and gave the entire center a facelift. Whispering Pines welcomed over 100 volunteers who cut trees, cleared trails, rebuilt stairs and performed erosion control. Volunteers performed over $40,000 of service. We'd like to thank Citi, IBM, The Westin La Paloma, Intuit, QuikTrip, Catalina Rotary, Davis Monthan Air Base and DCMA for all of their incredible work.
Philanthropy with Phlavor Pastiche Modern Eatery, a Tucson favorite since 1998, is an independently owned, fine-dining restaurant and lounge.
Through the "Philanthropy with Phlavor" program, Pastiche's patrons aid in deciding who receives the majority of Pastiche's charitable dollars. During the month of October, guests not only enjoy an outstanding meal but also have the opportunity to choose their favorite nonprofit organization to receive a donation from Pastiche. Please designate Sahuaro Girl Scout Council as your nonprofit of choice the next time you visit Pastiche.
Each time a customer dines at Pastiche, orders take-out food, makes a purchase at the Pastiche Wine Shop, or buys Pastiche gift certificates in October, staff invite them to choose one of 40 nonprofit organizations to receive 5% of their check amount (before tax, gratuity, or discounts). Pastiche is located at 3025 N. Campbell Ave. in Tucson. |

| Your Troop in the News |
| Are your Girl Scouts discovering, connecting and taking action in the community? Do they want to share their story with the local media? Many troop leaders call and ask if they can contact the media about a troop activity and the answer is... Have your girls make the connection with local media to share their stories and news. It is great experience for the girls and the media may be more receptive. The communications team at the Council office will approve news releases and help guide the girls in connecting with the media. This is a great experience for your girls! Please call Debbie at 319-3168 or 1-800-331-6782 ext. 3168 with questions. |
| Excuse Our Mess as We Welcome the New Bookmans Low Lounge! |
|
The Resource Center's library is going through a major facelift and transformation. In the next month, what used to be the bright blue, highly unorganized library will become the swanky new Bookmans Low Lounge. The new Lounge will be stocked full of contemporary literature for girls, fun and useful resources for adults, new computers with internet access, wireless internet access for laptop users, and the list goes on! Please excuse our mess as we finish this exciting project and be on the lookout for an invitation to the GRAND OPENING! |
| The Big Picture |
|
Discover + Connect + Take Action = Leadership The New Girl Scout Leadership Experience helps both girls and adult volunteers think about what girls can get out of any Girl Scout activity, whether it's a teddy bear tea or a canoe trip down a river. The idea is that every experience has the potential to achieve at least one of the 15 designated outcomes that are essential to strong leadership. These outcomes are organized around the three leadership keys:
Discover
· Girls develop a strong sense of self · Girls develop positive values · Girls gain practical life skills · Girls seek challenges in the real world · Girls develop critical thinking
Connect
· Girls develop healthy relationships · Girls promote cooperation and team building · Girls can resolve conflicts · Girls advance diversity in a multicultural world · Girls feel connected to their communities, locally and globally
Take Action
· Girls can identify community needs · Girls are resourceful problem-solvers · Girls advocate for themselves and others, locally and globally · Girls educate and inspire others to act · Girls feel empowered to make a difference in the world
Just as important as what girls do is how they do it. The three Girl Scout processes for activities involve cooperative learning, are girl-led, and allow for learning by doing. |
| Girl Scout Glossary |
Three Keys to Leadership
Discover: Girls understand themselves and their values and use their knowledge and skills to explore the world. Connect: Girls care about, inspire, and team with others locally and globally. Take Action: Girls act to make the world a better place, using critical thinking skills to get to the root of an issue and strive toward lasting change.
Girl Scout Processes
Cooperative Learning: All members of a group work together toward a common goal that can only be accomplished with the help of others. Girl-Led: Girls play an active role in the planning and implementation of activities, while adults provide age-appropriate guidance, ensuring that planning, organization, setup, and evaluation of all activities are done jointly with girls. Learning by Doing: A "hands-on" learning process that engages girls in cycles of action and reflection resulting in deeper understanding of concepts and mastery of practical skills.
Girl Scout Levels have been adjusted to these grade ranges: Daisy, K-1 Brownie, 2-3 Junior, 4-5 Cadette, 6-7-8 Senior, 9-10 Ambassador, 11-12
Volunteers should follow local council plans for phasing girls into these levels. | |
