Odissi and Rajasthani Dance with Colleena Shakti
at FatChanceBellyDance, Inc.
Sun 8 May Mother's Day Odissi workshop
Entry Level Odissi Workshop
In preparation for a summer series of ongoing Odissi classes @ FCBD studios, Colleena will introduce one of the world's most ancient lineages of classical temple dance. Odissi is a rich movement vocabulary that communicates meaning through its gestures. Training for this dance works on many levels of awareness such as: rhythmic sense, contrasting and layered movements, concentration and intuitive emotion. Discipline in lines of the body and alertness in the muscles are as much a part of Odissi as the emotive subtle mood created by the dancer. This entry level workshop will cover basic posture and techniques of Odissi dance.
2-4pm $40 each workshop or $70 both workshops
Dances of the Divine Mother
The subtle Bhavas of the Divine Mother as expressed in Indian philosophies will be discussed and explored through yoga, mudra, meditation and Odissi dance postures Improve your dance by acting out different 'characters' found in Indian dance. Discover quality of movement, facial expression, multi-layered concentration exercises, mudra vocabulary, and connect to the ancient tradition of devotional dance - a key part of every human society since the dawn of humankind. Spend this Mothers Day expressing moods of the Mother through beautiful Indian classical dance movements.
4-6pm $40 each workshop or $70 both workshops
Sun 15 May Rajasthani "Gypsy" Dance Workshops
Kalbelia Gypsy Dance Workshop
Colleena has been in Rajasthan, India much of the last 10 years living very close with a tribe of semi nomadic snake charmers known as jogi or Kalbelia people. She travels regularly across India with her Rajasthani Langa musicians and Kalbelia dancers performing and promoting traditional Indian arts. This workshop is a human approach to the tribal improvisational dance of the alluring Kalbelia women. Colleena brings her stories and insights to give a well-rounded understanding of this dance style. All are welcome!
2-4pm $40 each workshop or $70 both workshops
North Indian Turns and Steps
Though the Kalbelia women are 'untrained' tribal dancers, they move with exquisite skill and grace. This class will break down the techniques of training for Rajasthani dance Colleena has developed from working with the 'Gypsy' girls for so many years. Rapid spins of various kinds are the most thrilling part of North Indian dance and have many interesting techniques. This is an excellent study for dances of any genre.
4-6pm $40 each workshop or $70 both workshops

Singing Workshop with Ling Shien
Sat 7 May, 2-4pm
Learn the choruses from the folkloric songs of Helm's recordings, thus acquiring a deeper understanding of Middle Eastern culture and musical styles.
Ling Shien will go over the rhythms and modes used in a particular song, as well as the meaning of the words and voice warm-ups for each particular song.

Since acquiring good singing skills will take time, we are expanding this singing workshop to meet once a month, stay tuned for future plans.
This class replaces Drills and Improv on Sat 7 May.
$20, drop in.
"I thought I couldn't sing but this workshop made it really fun!"

Tribal Fest
19-22 May*
Let's not forget the epic TRIBAL FEST held every year in scenic Sebastopol CA. FatChanceBellyDance and Red Louts close the show on Sunday 22 May!
Our workshop this year is Connecting the Dots, a 3-Day Intensive:
Dot-you have technique. Dot-you have a show coming up. Dot-how do you put them together?
ATS Technique + ATS Formations alone do not make a show. Learn how everyday eye contact and facial expressions (yes, the smile!) can make or break your presentation. Learn to see yourself from the audience's perspective - it's not the same thing that you are feeling.
We'll work on entrances and exits, transitions and musicality. We'll end up with a dynamite show that is as much fun for the dancer as the audience.
Plus: a sampling of some New Moves from our Sister Studios.
Skill Level: Dancers should know the basics of Taxeem, Bodywave, Hand Floreos and Arm Undulations, Shimmy, Arabic Basic, Egyptian Basic, Pivot Bumps and Choo-choos.
*FCBD Studio closed Fri 20 and Sat 21 May.
What to Bring: Finger cymbals and water
What to Wear: Choli, full skirt and pantaloons or basic dance wear
