Screen-Free Week Screen-Free Week, sponsored by the Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood, is coming April 18-24 (school vacation week) and, with your help, it can be the best ever! It is easy and fun to organize a Screen-Free Week in your school or community. For 2011, the new, improved Organizer's Kit will walk you through the process; it includes suggestions, activities, posters, and handouts you will need for a great Screen-Free Week. Order by February 15th to get free shipping. Screen-Free Week is not just about snubbing screens for seven days; it is a springboard for important lifestyle changes that will improve overall wellbeing and quality of life all year round. The Keep ME Well initiative includes an online tool to help people assess their health risks, obtain a report that helps them take action to find local resources and suport in their own communities, and find low cost health care services. This website is a very useful tool for health care providers and their patients.
Keep ME Well is designed to help Maine residents assess their risk for chronic disease, improve their health through education, and link them to local resources and supports that can help them decrease their risk of chronic disease and improve their health.
Keep ME Well has two main features. The first is an assessment that Maine residents, 18 years or older, can complete. Based on answers to a series of health questions, participants will get three personalized reports. The reports assess risk for chronic disease, highlight where one can go to take action to improve his or her health, and provide a list of local resources that can help with disease prevention and management.
The second feature helps Mainers, especially those who are uninsured or underinsured, learn about low cost health care services in their local area. To learn more and access the tool, go to keepmewell.org. |

Let it Snow! Visit one of several free local spots for outdoor activity in the Capital Area
Bond Brook Recreation Area Open
 | | Photo Courtesy Mary Owen taken while snowshoeing in Bond Brook Recreation Area |
The Bond Brook Recreation Area is brand new to the City of Augusta and the most recent park acquisition and area under development. Located in the middle of the Capital City, this park is being developed in partnership with a newly formed 501 c-3 Not-For-Profit organization aptly named Augusta Trails as well as another very important partner (CeMeNEMBA) Central Maine
New England Mountain Bike Association. The initial goal of these two great partners is the development of non-motorized trails for hiking, snowshoeing, mountain biking, and nordic skiing among other trail uses. Nordic skiing is currently available with access at the Mt. Hope Cemetery and parking along Winthrop Street. This is a work in progress that over the years will result in a world class nordic and mountain bike facility that will become an integral part of our community and culture. Geocaching has also become a very popular activity on this parkland.
Viles Arboretum Offers Groomed Trails
Located at 153 Hospital Street in Augusta, Viles Arboretum is situated on 224 acres and is home to 5 miles of trails open year round and available at no charge. Visitors can access trails for nordic skiing and snowshoeing from dawn to dusk, seven days a week.
Nordic Skiing at Buker Community Center
Groomed trails for nordic skiing at the Buker Community Center at 22 Armory Street in Augusta are one of the newest additions to the Augusta Trails Network. The trails are maintained by volunteers on behalf of Augusta Trails.
Support Augusta Trails
Augusta Trails has kicked off a capital campaign to raise funds necessary to build trails, construct roads, and install benches and information kiosks. Every penny counts when it comes raising the funds needed for project work. The organization has received numerous very genreous gifts to date in addition to grants but still has a long way to go to raise all of the funds necessary. Please consider getting involved in a small or a big way for this most worthy project and campaign. It can only be successful with many individuals and organizations getting involved. If you are interested in supporting Augusta Trails please e-mail or call Leif Dahlin at leif.dahlin@augustamaine.gov or 207.626.2305.

Poison Prevention Week
The week of March 20-26, 2011 is National Poison Prevention Week. Some of the most common substances in reported poisonings are tobacco-related products. In 2007, the American Association of Poison Control Centers received more than 7,735 reports of potentially toxic exposures to tobacco products among children younger than 6 years of age in the United States. Most cases of nicotine poisoning among children result from ingestion of cigarettes or chewing tobacco. Children in households where cigarettes are smoked in their presence were four times more likely to ingest cigarettes or cigarette butts than in households where smoking does not occur around children. Most ingestions happen in homes where children are exposed to secondhand smoke and where cigarettes and ashtrays are kept within the reach of children. Adults who smoke in the home or around children may not be aware of the danger of cigarettes and cigarette butts to children. Children ages 6 to 24 months are actively exploring their environment and often put things in their mouths. It is very important that parents and caregivers store tobacco products out of the reach of children and that they do not smoke around children because of the associated health hazards. Keep in mind, tobacco products are poisonous to pets too. Minor effects of potential poisoning may include vomiting, nausea, lethargy, gagging, and a pale or flushed appearance. Severe toxicity may cause slowed breathing, irregular heartbeat, and convulsions. If ingestion does occur, call Poison Control immediately 1.800.222.1222. In addition to preventing nicotine poisonings, avoiding tobacco use around children also:
- Decreases the risk for lower respiratory and ear infections
- Decreases the risk that children will become smokers
- Decreases children's access to lighted cigarettes, matches, and lighters, thereby reducing the risk for burns and fires started by children-a leading cause of fire-related deaths among children
younger than 5
To reduce the risk of child and pet poisonings and the associated hazards of tobacco use, consider quitting tobacco. Call the Maine Tobacco HelpLine for help.
You can also pledge to keep your home and car Smoke Free by taking the Smoke Free Homes Pledge at smokefreeforme.org

KVCAP Introduces the Kennebec Explorer
For the first time in recent memory, local buses are operating between Augusta and Waterville. The Kennebec Explorer offers four round trips daily on comfortable, accessible, air conditioned (and heated) buses operated by professional drivers between the two cities. The cost for a one-way ride is only $3.00. The Waterville route includes a stop at MaineGeneral's Thayer Unit. In Augusta, the bus stops at Concord Coach with connections to Portland, Boston, and Bangor; the Career Center; the Harold Alfond Center for Cancer Care; and UMA by request. Consider the Kennebec Explorer for shopping, social visits, errands, and business in both communities. In developing the new Kennebec Explorer transit program, community planners have looked beyond the present system toward possible future expansion that will depend upon how residents respond to the first phase of transit improvements. Included in the vision:
- Local commuter routes for state office workers and others who live in Augusta
- New services for Waterville commuters
- More frequent all-day service between Waterville and Augusta
- An expanded Waterville transit program, with a new route to Colby College, and more frequent service to Kennebec Valley Community College
- A possible new information and transit hub in downtown Waterville
Consider the Kennebec Explorer for your next local trip. Routes are designed to offer a convenient, affordable means of transportation to the general public including commuters, elderly passengers, and passengers with disabilities. The Kennebec Explorer is funded by federal and state programs administered through the Maine Department of Transportation as well as contributions from local communities and fare box revenue. To learn more and view the Kennebec Explorer schedule, go to www.kvcap.org/trans-kvtransit.php

Bicycle Coalition of Maine Premieres Two Public Service Announcements The Bicycle Coalition of Maine is premiering two public service announcements (PSAs) about bicycle safety and sharing the road in advance of the spring cycling season. One PSA reminds motorists that cyclists have a legal right to use the roadways just as other slow-moving vehicles do, and that motorists should give at least three feet of clearance when passing cyclists. "It's safe," says the narrator. "It's courteous. And it's the law." The second PSA shows a teenage boy handing a keychain to his mother. "I'm trusting you with the keys," he says. "Drive safe." The mother promises, then unlocks her bicycle and takes off. She demonstrates safe cycling behaviors such as signaling turns, obeying traffic signs, and using lights at night. Both PSAs will be distributed on the web, on social media sites such as Facebook and Youtube and to Maine's public access television stations. The coalition also is seeking donated airtime and/or funding to broadcast the PSAs on commercial television. View the PSAs at www.bikemaine.org/news-room/share-the-road-media-campaign
Peaceful Playgrounds Right to Recess Campaign
Experts agree that playtime can be just as vital as classroom time to a child's social, emotional and educational development. Despite mounting evidence that kids need an outlet to blow off steam, learn to interact with others, and get the exercise they need, nearly 40 percent of American elementary schools have either eliminated or are considering eliminating recess. Due to school budget cuts and an increased focus on academic standards, millions of American schoolchildren may miss out on unstructured play with their peers including hopscotch, tag, kickball, or jump rope. Recess also functions successfully as an established school-based activity and should be carefully considered as part of any school health and wellness policy. A survey conducted by the PTA showed that 9 out of 10 teachers say recess and the free time spent with peers is an important part of the school day and is crucial to a child's social and emotional development. You can have the FREE Peaceful Playgrounds Right to Recess Campaign Toolbox sent directly to your email box. The campaign toolbox contains a full PowerPoint presentation and speakers notes along with research and documents to support daily, unstructured physical activity during school hours.
