Closing In On Graduation 2010!!
Congratulations Seniors, Class of 2010!
THANK YOU Project Graduation Committees across Southern Kennebec County!!
Teams of parents and school personnel across the State of Maine are working hard to plan celebrations for their seniors: highlighting the end of their years of public school-and their first step onward into the future. For each these groups, the work began many months ago-with a ton of things left to do. This newsletter highlights some of the activities going on in our area. |

Gardiner Area High School
The Events: This year's Senior Class of approximately 155
students is going on a cruise provided by Casco Bay Lines. The group is headed out of Portland Harbor on
the evening of June 5th and returning the morning of the 6th. There will be lots of activities on board,
including a casino-type game (no money involved), a disc jockey, karaoke; a
hypnotist; a caricature artist; and a Gardiner High School trivia game. Many of the prizes in connection with the
games will be practical items that the students are likely to find useful as
they make their way out into the world, and for many, onto college.
This year's event was planned with input from a survey of
student opinions. It was chosen from a
final list of three options, following additional conversation among students
and adults. Last year the Senior Class
spent the night following graduation at the Alfond Center in Waterville.
Students also considered a white water rafting trip, and
based on high interest in this event, students may opt to participate in this
additional activity as well, upon returning to Gardiner on June 6th. Students who choose to participate in this
extra trip are being asked to pay a fee of $25.
The Planners: This year's adult organizer is Brenda
Lawrence, a Gardiner Middle School Ed Tech who is stepping up, for the first
time, to serve as Class Coordinator. She
has been working closely with a group of about 30 students on the planning
effort. She has had help from a group of
parents who have stepped in to pick up a series of projects over the course of
the year.
Fundraising
Activities: Fundraising has been
going on all year! One of the early
events was Take Home A Tiger Day, where students signed up to help local
community members with one-day projects, in exchange for a donation to Project
Graduation.
Many
area and statewide businesses are stepping up to help out. To mention a few: Applebee's Restaurant, and Manager Steve
Kozma, have helped with a fundraising breakfast and significant donations of
product and staff time for a spaghetti dinner.
Matt Folsom, auctioneer from D A Folsom, in Gardiner provided his
services to the group for The Auction, which was held in December. The event featured items donated by
businesses from across the state.
Continued
contributions are critical to make this celebration a reality
Upcoming events
include:
- A student St. Patrick's Day dance,
to be held on March 19th
- A Raffle for an Old Town Kayak, April
3rd: This boat was donated at
cost, will be given to the holder of the winning raffle ticket (now being
sold around town).
- The Alumni Basketball Tournament,
April 2nd and 3rd: Teams of 10 players pay a fee and
compete for the tournament title.
Teams must have at least 2 female players--with at least one on the
court at all times. The tournament
is a double elimination competition.
Last year's tournament generated a lot of enthusiasm. The youngest player was a 2008 GHS graduate;
the oldest member of any team was almost 60 years old. One Gardiner family had members of five
generations in the building, including those on the court and those in the
stands.
Want to Help Make The
Celebration A Success?
1) Buy a raffle ticket! Contact any GHS Senior; call the High
School; or connect with Brenda (see below).
Drawing April 3rd.
2) Donate or contribute cash toward
the prizes to be awarded to students during the cruise on June 5th-6th
3) Are you an experienced
referee? Contact Brenda about
helping out at the Alumni Basketball Tournament.

Cony High School
The
Celebration: The Project Graduation
team at Cony High is preparing for its annual gathering at the Augusta Civic Center for the 211 members of the Senior Class.
It will be an overnight event on June 13, 2010, beginning at 8 PM, through
June 14, 2010 at noon, with music, a casino, a game room (video and table
games), laser tag, inflatable games, and other entertainment. A similar program format has been offered for
students for a number of years, with considerable success. This year, as in the past, the organizing
committee surveyed students and used that input to prepare a program designed
to capture the particular interests of this year's students. Committee members expect to have one more
open conversation with students over the next couple weeks.
The Planners and Contributors:
A group of parents, in cooperation with the school's Senior Advisors and
Staff, has been working since Graduation 2009 to plan and carry out this year's
event. An estimated 30 parents have been
involved so far.
Several local
businesses have stepped up to support this year's event. They include Kennebec Jewelers, which
provides for customers to donate a portion of the exchange of gold for cash to
Project Graduation 2010, and Augusta Florist, which will be donating 10%
of the proceeds of tuxedo rentals to the project.
The group is using some
creative ways to get the word out about Project Graduation. John Rodrigue and Charles Fontaine have been
interviewed about the effort on Supt. Connie Brown's television show on Cable
Channel 7. The program will be aired
over the next several weeks.
Ongoing and Upcoming Events:
There are several projects underway, including:
1) The Energy Raffle: Tickets are available for $5 each. Prizes include
Winning tickets will be
chosen on March 10th at the following event...
2) The Harlem Superstars, March
10th at the Cony Gymnasium:
Tickets are on sale now for this event, at College Carryout, Play It Again Sports, Cony High School and other locations. Corporate sponsors for this event include: Pats' Pizza, Colwell Banker, EMS, Lipman, Katz and McKee,
and Blind Time. Tickets are being
sold at $7 in advance and $8 at the door of the event.
3) The Comedy Show, April 9th
at Cony High School: Tickets will be
going on-sale shortly.
Want to Help Make The Celebration A Success?
1) Buy raffle tickets
2) Attend any or all of the events
3) Make a contribution that works for you: the group can use donations of cash, products
or food for events, and the time of community members to help plan or implement
either the fundraisers or the celebration itself.

The Celebration: Winthrop's Project Graduation celebration is
scheduled for the evening of June 13th and overnight into June 14th. Consistent with community tradition, the
location of the event remains a secret at this time. Students will board buses after graduation
and head out to a program site where they will have the opportunity to hear
presenters/performers of special interest, and participate in games and other
organized activities. As with other
celebrations, Winthrop's program is designed to be a memorable gathering of the
class and positive, group experience.
The vast majority of the 64 members of the Class of 2010 are expected to
attend.
The Planners: Project Graduation in Winthrop is an almost
100% parent driven and supported event, with a remarkably high number of
parents contributing to the effort. With
most of the fundraising tied to one event (see below), parents focus a lot of
their energy during Senior Year on planning the celebration itself. There is informal feedback from students
about what might interest them, and sharing of experiences and lessons learned
by those who have planned and participated in previous years'
celebrations. What worked and what
didn't in the past is being factored into this year's program. Rhonda Kaiser is this year's Program Chair,
serving for the first time in this capacity.
Fundraising
Activities: Students have been
participating in relatively low-key fundraising activities since Freshman
year. As in previous years, the 2010
Project Graduation committee sponsored the program's largest single
fundraiser: the Tip Off Tournament. This event, held at the very beginning of the
basketball season, draws many area high school teams to Winthrop for some hotly
contested games. The prime sponsor of
this year's Tip Off Tournament was Kennebec Savings Bank, which helped
make the event a continuing, strong financial success. An additional strong supporter of the program
over the last several years has been the Winthrop Credit Union.
What's Next and How
You Can Help Support the Event: With
the next big event being Project Graduation itself, the planning team is
looking for:
1) Financial contributions and donations of
items that can be used as prizes
2) People who would like to participate in final
planning meetings, and
3) People who would like to help chaperone the
event on June 13-14
People can get involved in a number of different ways:
completing one-time assignemnts or helping out over the next several months.

Maranacook Community High School
The Celebration: On June 13th, the 104 members of the Senior Class are invited to head out to the Boothbay Harbor YMCA for an overnight event. Activities will include sports games, game show type games, Guitar Hero, the use of inflatables, and other entertainment options, provided by a local business, Compass Rose Events.
Planning has been done by a committed group of 15 school and parent representatives with input from students. The event itself, including the location and activities vary from year to year. Individual projects, including the various fundraisers are managed by different people.
Fundraising Activities: Consistent with past support a very large group of local people, organizations and business is stepping up to help support both the fundraising events and the celebration itself. The full list of supporters will be posted and recognized on the Maranacook website. The group has completed some fundraising events already, and has two key activities coming up shortly, including:
1) Spaghetti Dinner and Auction on April 10th: This is one of the group's most important fundraisers. It includes dinner followed by both a silent and live auction in the High School gym. Items available for bid include both products and services donated by local community members, businesses and students. Some notable early supporters of the upcoming auction (see below) include Kennebec Savings, KV YMCA, Simon's Photography, and Longfellow's Greenhouses. This event is currently under development.
2) The Talent Show, scheduled for May 7th and 8th: Student performers are selected based on their performance in the auditions for the show. It is essentially a student run activity, with a student Master of Ceremonies.
What's Next and How You Can Help Support the Effort:
1) Donate items and services to be auctioned off on April 10th 2) Attend the Spaghetti Dinner and/or the Talent Show 3) Get involve in the planning effort

Project Graduation: A Celebration That Continues Across the
Country That Began In Maine
A Little Bit of History:
From the text of: MMWR Weekly May 03, 1985 / 34(17);233-5
"During the 1979 commencement period (May 15-June 30) in
Maine, seven of the 12 deaths among teenagers that resulted from driving under
the influence of alcohol occurred in the area of Oxford Hills. In response to
this loss of life, a school-community coalition from Oxford Hills developed and
implemented a program called "Project Graduation," a chemical-free
graduation celebration, during the 1979-1980 school year. During Oxford Hills'
1980 commencement period, there were no fatalities, no alcohol or drug-related
injuries, and no arrests for driving under the influence of alcohol.
The number of fatalities occurring among 15- to 19-year-old
Maine residents during the graduation period that involved teenagers driving
under the influence of alcohol decreased from 12 in 1979 to one in 1984, with
an intermittent drop to zero in 1983 (Figure 1). During this period, the number
of high schools participating in Project Graduation increased from 1 to 129....
Although it is not possible to attribute the cause of the
downward trend in Maine teen drinking and driving fatalities to the adoption of
Project Graduation, evidence is sufficient to encourage public health support
for the continued promotion of this important program..."
