Smoke-Free State Parks and Beaches
Effective May 1st smoking at Maine State Parks and Beaches, including Historic Sites, will no longer be permitted by law. An Act to Protect Maine's State Parks and Historic Sites was enacted just in time for the 2009 tourist season. In a joint collaboration between the Department of Conservation and the Partnership for a Tobacco-Free Maine visitors to State Parks, Beaches, and Historic sites will see updated brochures and signage communicating the law. Be sure to thank your legislators for passing this important Bill and working to protect the health of all Mainers and visitors to Maine.

HCCA Recognizes Community Members Affecting Youth Wellness
HCCA held its Annual Board Meeting on April 27th in the beautiful surroundings at the Harold Alfond Center for Cancer Care. Several awards were given to local coalition members who work with HCCA to improve the lives of youth in southern Kennebec County. Among them:
- Rich Abramson, Superintendent, Maranacook Area Schools was awarded the Big Public Health Picture Award for prioritizing and integrating student and staff wellness in Maranacook Area Schools.
- Scott Bell, Principal, Monmouth Academy was awarded the Hit the Ground Running Award for immediately focusing on student wellness issues in his first year as principal at Monmouth Academy.
- Sonia Godbout, Wellness Coordinator, Maranacook Area Schools was awarded the Big Impact on a Part-Time Schedule Award for her ability to implement a Coordinated Approach to School Health in Maranacook Area Schools.
- Jonathan Leach, Executive Director, The Children's Center was awarded the Worksite Wellness Leadership Award for his prioritization and integration of staff, children, and families' wellness into the Children's Center worksite wellness program.
- Rachael Newman, Family Services Coordinator, SKCDC Head Start was awarded the Earlier the Better Award for her willingness and ability to engage families of young children to improve nutrition.
Youth of all ages across southern Kennebec County will continue to benefit tremendously because of the tireless ongoing commitment of individuals like these awardees. Thank you for all you do. |

Free Camping for New Campers
Thirty-two Maine families who have never been camping have a unique opportunity this summer. The Bureau of Parks & Lands along with the Take It Outside initiative is offering families the opportunity to reconnect with nature by spending a weekend at one of 8 participating Maine State Parks.
Winning families will receive:
- a two-night reservation at their chosen state park,
- a complete set of camping equipment to use for the weekend courtesy of L.L. Bean and Coleman,
- a $50 Hannaford gift card,
- Oakhurst Dairy coupons,
- Coffee from Wicked Joe,
- and Poland Spring water.
The University of Maine 4-H Camp & Learning Center at Bryant Pond will offer programs at select parks. The contest begins on April 1, 2009 and continues through May 31, 2009. Winners will be selected in a random drawing on Monday June 8, 2009. This program is intended for first-time campers, and is offered to Maine Residents only.

Grant and Funding Opportunities
Budget cuts and a suffering economy has put a damper on funding for many wellness initiatives. Here are some wonderful grant opportunities to help supplement those dwindling budgets.
Phoenix Farm Community Supported Agriculture Phoenix Farm in Monmouth has increased the number of CSA shares available for the 2009 growing season. Healthy Sprouts Award Do you plan to have a youth garden program in 2010?
