Give the Perfect Gift
Looking for a last minute gift that doesn't feel like one? Shopping for the man, or woman, who has everything? Give a gift certificate from Classic Cars and Byways! Your thoughtfulness and creativity will be appreciated now, and you both (or your whole family) will enjoy a great time with a classic sports car come the warmth of summer. It's quick and easy: just call or email us, complete a reservation form and deposit, and we'll send you a personalized certificate good for one year including a photo of our Speedster or Mustang - or both if you're undecided!

If a gift certificate seems a little skimpy in the physical presence how about a car lover's book as an add on? Two possibilities were recently reviewed in the New York Times; either would perfectly accompany the gift of our Speedster or Mustang. You can spend a lot ($299.95) or a little ($26).

Porsche
The Complete History of Types and Models

By Jürgen Barth and Gustav Büsing.
David Bull Publishing. $299.95
Porsche aficonados can never get too much of their favorite car. This three-volume set has over 2,000 photographs and 1,500 pages. And it's authored by Jürgen Barth, who grew up in the Porsche company, was a longtime test driver, and won Le Mans with two star co-drivers, Jacky Ickx and Hurley Haywood. Smartly packaged in a sturdy slipcase, the three volumes are organized logically. The first book covers the rear-engine models that made Porsches famous - the 356, the Speedster and the 911. Volume 2 looks at the more recent mid- and front-engine Porsches like the 914, 944 and Boxster, while the third book focuses exclusively on the vast procession of innovative Porsche racecars.

Go Like Hell
Ford, Ferrari and Their Battle
for Speed and Glory at Le Mans
By A. J. Baime.
Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. $26.
"Go Like Hell" may suggest a book about Hell Drivers jumping bus carcasses at a county fair, but title aside, A. J. Baime, tells a sophisticated tale of the Ford-Ferrari rivalry for glory at Le Mans in 1963-66. Henry Ford II, the Deuce, and Enzo Ferrari, Il Commendatore, fought the battle with all the autocratic ruthlessness of men whose names were on the building. The brash American spent tons of money and three years to beat the aristocratic Europeans on their own turf. The supporting cast includes some of the greatest names in racing history: Phil Hill, Carroll Shelby, John Surtees, Ken Miles, Dan Gurney, Bruce McLaren and a young Mario Andretti. The cars developed in the rivalry - the Ferrari 330 P3 and the Ford GT40 Mk II - remain works of automotive art. And Ford's ultimate triumph remains one of America's greatest ever - and is recalled by our own Mustang from the same era.
