Dear ,
Here's the latest from Classic Cars and Byways.
Try Before You Buy...

Derek and Thea from Falmouth, Maine chose a great fall day to try out the Speedster. Derek has been thinking that it's the time in his life when he'd like a totally fun, outrageously beautiful car. He's thinking Speedster! He's done the research, visited the websites, checked out the builders. Good job - but that doesn't compare with actually driving the car. So Derek and Thea got to spend as much time as they needed with the Speedster and were able to take it wherever they liked. Now they have all the information they need to make an informed, thoughtful, rational decision. Or... maybe the right-brain will take over and they'll just GO FOR IT!
Speedster Sightings
On Saturday, October 12, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., the Speedster will be at the 2nd Annual Drive for Wishes car show in Burlington. This is a unique event in that all proceeds will benefit the Make a Wish Foundation of Massachusetts. You'll see over 175 classic and contemporary cars, from the rare to the luxurious, including Ferrari, Aston Martin and Jaguar as well as American classics such as T-birds, Corvettes and Mustangs. There's also a silent auction, lots of food and music. A great time and a chance to help kids with serious illnesses live their dreams.
Classic Cars...
Have you seen the Mini ads about the " carfun footprint"? In a clever campaign, Mini taps into the global warming issue by creating a calculator that combines a fun factor with environmental impact to yield individual "carfun" scores for almost 200 cars. Not surprisingly, the Mini ranks #1. It has a fun score of 81 and environmental impact score of 62 for a "carfun" rating of 72. For comparison sake, my son's Scion TC has a fun score of 72 and environmental score of 49 for a "carfun" rating of 61, which puts it 16th on the list.
How would our Speedster score? We can only speculate, of course, because the data underlying the calculator is only available for current models. The Porsche Boxster -- you could argue the current incarnation of the Speedster -- comes in 2nd on the "carfun" scale, with a fun rating just above the Mini at 82, but a lower environmental impact score. One of the factors in the environmental rating is curb weight - used as a proxy for the environmental impact of manufacturing and disposal. The Speedster weighs in at only 1700 pounds, a substantial half-ton less than even the Mini. So, with an undeniable fun rating and off-the-charts environmental score, I'm ready to proclaim a new champion! Drive a Speedster - save the globe!
Up north, also on October 12, the Owl's Head Transportation Museum in Maine will hold its annual Foreign Auto Festival and Antique Aeroplane Show. Porsche is the featured marque this year so all Porsche owners-of any year-are invited to exhibit their vehicles free of charge. The variety can be impressive at this show: Austin Healey, MG, Triumph, Porsche, Ferrari, Citroen, Mercedes, BMW, Rolls Royce, Bentley, Jaguar, Volkswagen and more. It's also a great family event. As part of the day's activities the Museum will give free rides in Ford Model Ts. and young children can practice their driving skills in the Kids Corral area, which features pedal cars and pedal planes. The unique part of Owl's Head is its antique aeroplane collection. Seeing action will be the 1917 Nieuport 28C.1, 1917 SPAD XIII and the 1916 Royal Aircraft Factory FE8 among others. An open flight line will allow visitors to get an up close look at the planes as well as talk to the pilots
Have you visited the Shaker Village at Canterbury, New Hampshire? I think it's one of New England's best-kept secrets. It has a wonderful feel of tranquility, spaciousness and antiquity. This is a great time to visit. The fall foliage will be an added attraction and the village is far enough off the beaten path to avoid most of the "leaf-peepers." Canterbury is a national historic landmark and museum with 25 restored and 4 reconstructed Shaker buildings along with 694 acres of gardens, fields, ponds and forests. There are tours, exhibits, workshops, family programs, hiking trails and unique shopping. There's also a wonderful full service restaurant, the Shaker Table, serving Shaker-inspired cuisine at lunch, dinner and Sunday brunch -- which we can testify is delicious. Reservations are strongly recommended - call 603.783.4238.
Saturday, October 18 would be a particularly good day to visit. The village is offering it's 12th annual celebration of classic automobiles. Visitors can view a wide range of classic cars, meet the owners, and talk with fellow antique car enthusiasts. Hope to see you there!
