Little Kids Want To Be Big Kids: A parenting strategy for some common behavior problems

Little kids want to be big kids, and parents can leverage that desire to get cooperation when behavior problems arise. 
 
In one example, 4-year-old Emma's mom asked her to blow her nose. "No!" Emma shouted. Remembering how important it was for Emma to feel like a big kid, Mom said, "Oh, that's right, I know that only big kids can blow their noses by themselves." Emma grabbed the Kleenex from her mom and said, "I can too blow my nose! I'm a big kid," and proceeded .....(Click Here to read more.)

 There's No Need To Battle Over Homework

Some of you already know that I really struggledCharlie Fay in school as a kid. Doing what they thought was best, my parents sat right next to me and employed a combination of begging, pleading, bribing, lecturing and threatening. The harder they worked, the less I did!
 
When I started the fifth grade, they began a new plan that radically changed my life and theirs. We've seen similar results with family after family over the past thirty years.

Why Won't You Let Me?

It might be comforting to know that you don't have to be able to provide a good reason for saying no to your kids. Our kids are not our supervisors. If something doesn't feel right to you, that's a good enough reason to say no. The best parents have the courage to say no when their intuition warns them about a situation even if they cannot put the reason into words.

Fifteen-year-old Will used to be successful at getting his way. Every time his dad said no, he demanded an explanation for Dad's refusal. Dad would give in whenever he could not put his reason into words. All this came to a screeching halt the day Dad learned to say...(Click here for rest of the story.)
