Gov. Blunt Assigns Mental Health Division New Name,
Removes "Mental Retardation" from Title

JEFFERSON CITY -
Gov. Matt Blunt today signed an executive order officially changing the name of the Division of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities to the Division of Developmental Disabilities.      
     "Advocates have actively called for this change both nationally and in Missouri," Gov. Blunt said. "Missouri was just one of seven states that had not yet removed this term from state agency divisions, departments and committees.  And while the change has absolutely no impact on the funding or function of the division it has a significant benefit to the division's statutory obligation to reduce the stigma of having a developmental disability."
