The Next 2 Weeks Of Issues Are All About TOMATOES!

What Kind of Tomato Do You Want?

Before you begin your tomato growing journey then most important thing to figure out, is what type of tomato you want to put into your garden. The types are Standards, Heirlooms, and Hybrids. Standard tomatoes are not bred with any special disease resistance.Heirloom tomatoes are open-pollinated tomatoes, whose seeds are handed down from generation to generation. Don't let the uneven appearance fool you, heirloom tomatoes are most for their incredible taste and they stand up to these expectations! Hybrid tomatoes are most common and they are tomatoes that have been bred to have desirable qualities, such as disease resistance.

Helpful Hybrid Tomato Information

DETERMINATE - Will produce a heavier yield at one time. Best for canning.

INDETERMINATE-  Will continue to bear and ripen throughout the summer.  We recommend staking or caging this type of tomato.  Best for continual eating enjoyment.

DISEASE RESISTANT

The following letters mean that the plant is more resistant to these types of diseases:

V       Verticulum                    Wilt & Fungus Resistant

F       Furarum                        Wilt Resistant

N       Numatoid                      Insect Resistant

T       Tobacco Mosaic            Virus Resistant

TOMATO TIPS

Plants may be allowed to sprawl over the ground, but they produce better fruit if tied to stakes at least 4 foot tall on tomato plants that require staking.  ALL INDETERMINATE TOMATO PLANTS SHOULD BE STAKED.

Do not hoe too close to the plant as it breaks off the roots that supply water to the fruit.

Putting plastic jugs over he plants to create a greenhouse effect can help the plant grow faster.

Before first frost, pull up plants and hang them in a protected place.  Many of the green tomatoes will ripen.  Keep dry or mold will occur.

TWO COMMON PROBLEMS

LEAF ROLL- is caused by too much fertilizer or herbicide spray.

WHITE SHOULDERS-This is when the tops of the tomato becomes white.  This caused by extremely high temperatures.
