CERTIFIED SEED POTATOES AND ONION SETS JUST ARRIVED!!
It's Time to Get Ready!! With Beier's Certified Seed Potatoes and Onion Sets JUST IN, Now is the time to Prep your Veggie Garden!
Your summer gardens will be much happier with a little up-front tender loving care. Here are 17 tips to prepping your veggie or flower garden for best success.
- Check your soil before you plant. Plants need rich, loose soil to grow lush and full. If you have heavy, clay soil, mix sphagnum peat moss liberally into the soil to loosen the clay. Sphagnum peat will also keep sandy soil from drying so quickly. You may also add well-rotted manure. This makes the soil richer and helps loosen the soil as well.
- For container gardeners, please use specially mixed potting soil from Beier's, not regular dirt. Containers need extra love in the dirt.
- Add some fertilizer to the soil and mix in thoroughly. Use a 10-10-10 mix in your flower beds and gardens. Be sure soil is well-wet before fertilizing.
- Harden plants off before planting them in the ground. All Beier's plants are pre-cooled at the greenhouse, but you must let them adjust to the conditions at your house before transplanting.
- Pinch off the tops of your annuals when you transplant to encourage branching and help roots get established.
- Push on the bottom of the greenhouse pot to POP the plant out. DO NOT grasp the plant and yank.
- Position the plant in the hole so the top of the current root ball is at ground level. Fill in the hole gently and firm the soil.
- Tomato plants are the exception to this rule. Plant tomatoes deep so they send out roots along the whole stem underground.
- Water thoroughly after transplanting.
- Check plants daily for water until they get established. Please don't over water. If the leaves are droopy but the soil is moist, spray with a fine-mist sprayer to increase absorption through the leaves.
- When plants are established, reduce watering frequency and apply more water each time.
- Pinch off old, faded blossoms. Better yet, pick the flowers before they fade and enjoy them inside the house.
- Pinch yellowed or wilted leaves.
- If a plant bolts in a strange direction, pinch it off and it will grow properly.
- Mulch to keep soil temperature even and save water.
- Fertilize every week with balanced fertilizer. Ask a Beier's associate about the best products for your flowers or vegetable garden.
- Enjoy your beautiful flowers and beautiful harvest!
