What's up with this long list of plants people claim will repel mosquitoes? A little investigative reporting delves into this question. One thing is for sure: organic bug repellent researchers and users say that natural sprays don't last as long as DEET or other poisons, and not everyone gets the same benefit from every type of repellent. For those who want to go the organic route, you'll need to reapply more frequently and try out different herbs and plants. Luckily, there are plenty! The Perennial Landscape
Planning a Perennial Cutting Garden
If you love to have bouquets in your home, planting your own cutting garden provides the abundance and variety you need. There are several things to consider in your plan. The choice of site depends on whether you choose to grow shade-loving or sun-loving flowers. Consider which plants you would like to have in bouquets. Of the plants you choose, be sure that the moisture requirements are similar.
Selecting flowers with common bloom times and complementary colors is equally important. Then, decide how early and late in the season you would like to cut flowers. To extend your cutting season and to provide the full spectrum of colors, plant both spring-blooming and summer / autumn-blooming bulbs. Many of these also have intense aromas that can add to their attraction.

Today's Recipe
Baking Soda Fungal Spray
Makes 1 quart
1 tablespoon baking soda
1 tablespoon liquid dish soap (Dawn works great)
1 quart plain water
Dissolve the baking soda in the water. Add liquid dish soap and shake well. Spray on the tops and bottoms of leaves every seven days for fungal and some bacterial diseases. This spray is effective in the rose garden.
Vampire Vanquishing Garlic Spray
Makes
1 pint
3 cloves garlic, finely minced or pressed
2 tablespoons mineral oil
1 tablespoon liquid dish soap (Dawn works great)
1 pint plain water
Soak the minced garlic in the mineral oil overnight. Strain and mix with liquid dish soap and water. Spray every seven days to treat and prevent fungus eruptions in the garden.
