The Beautiful Landscape A Petunia By Any Other Name: Supertunias
This basket features the Bordeaux and Royal Velvet supertunias | Some people say the geranium is the most popular flowering plant, but at Beier's we believe Supertunias could rival the old standby any day. Supertunias are bred to blossom furiously all summer in a dizzying array of colors. Don't want to deadhead? Then Supertunias are just for you! Supertunias are "self-cleaning." There is no need to pick off dead blossoms, they come off themselves! Supertunias are happy in containers and even happier in hanging baskets, low maintenance, and attract pollinators and hummingbirds.
Jump over to the Beier's website to read brief descriptions of our Supertunia selection, including combination suggestions for each and how to keep your petunias blooming their best all summer long.

The Herbal Landscape A Cooking Herb Collection
Rosemary is a must in the kitchen |
Sweet marjoram (Origanum majorana)Marjoram belongs to the same genus as oregano (Origanum vulgare), and both species sport fuzzy, feltlike leaves and a tangy flavor that brings to mind Mediterranean cooking. Marjoram helps its container companions by repelling aphids. This herb famously adds flavor to pizzas, but it's also great in egg dishes.
Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis)Historically, rosemary has been a symbol of love, fidelity, and remembrance. Currently, researchers are investigating rosemary as a possible treatment for Alzheimer's disease. Both fresh and dried leaves are excellent additions to roasted vegetables and meats.
Thyme (Thymus vulgaris)It's said that fairies live in patches of thyme. While we can't guarantee that this herb will attract Tinkerbell, it is sure to entice beneficial insects to the container. Upright thymes are easier to harvest and better for kitchen use than their creeping or mounding counterparts. Try adding minced thyme to butter and then melting the mixture over roasted potatoes.
Sage (Salvia officinalis)Sage's Latin name means "healer," and it is used by herbalists to treat everything from sore throats to poor digestion. Sage produces beautiful flowers that pollinating insects adore. Keep the flowers to add color to the container, or prune them back so that the plant continues to produce foliage. Fresh and dried leaves add a pungent flavor to sausages, stuffing, and breads.
Planting TipIf you want an herb such as thyme to cascade over the side of a pot, take a hint from Rose Marie Nichols McGee, coauthor of The Bountiful Container (Workman, 2002): Plant the herb at a 45-degree angle, with the plant's foliage positioned at the edge of the container and the roots pointed diagonally into the soil. As the plant matures, the foliage spills out of the pot and the roots grow down into the soil.

Now, that's an easy compost pile! | If you've ever thought about making your own compost, you've probably been turned off by the expensive, time consuming gadgets and methods the "compost gurus" encourage.
