The Perennial Landscape Growing Tree Peonies: Easy Care with Big Rewards
Close-up shot of the Kinkaku golden peony | Ahh, the tree peony, elegant queen of the garden. Tree peonies create giant blooms in an array of shocking colors, making them the centerpiece of color-themed cottage gardens or the foundation element in more formal French-style gardens. Once you introduce these beauties to your perennial beds, you'll wonder why you waited so long to bring them home.
Keep in mind that shrub peonies are long-lived plants and with a little care produce blooms for a century or more. Click on over to the Beier's website for tree peony tips! And drop us an email with photos of your peonies in bloom, if you've got 'em.

The Edible Landscape Planting Vegetables in Mid-Summer for Fall Harvest
Kohlrabi could be a late-season veggie in your garden | After harvesting early-maturing vegetables such as salad greens, radishes, peas and spinach, gardeners can plant other crops in midsummer for fall harvest. Some root crops, greens and other vegetables can be successfully grown from late June, July or even August plantings. Some vegetables will tolerate a fair amount of frost and keep growing even when temperatures are in the low forties. Others can't tolerate frost and stop growing in cool weather. Many of the cold-tolerant vegetables actually have better quality when grown in cool weather; it's said that the frost "sweetens" them.

The 5th Dimension Do You Know What's In Your Dirt?
Get down and dirty with your dirt by testing your soil | Soil testing is essential to good gardening practices. How else will you know how much and what kind of amendments to add? We found a wonderful article from Organic Gardening that delves into the details of pH, nutrients, and the affects of adding specific fertilizers to your soil. You'll also learn how to interpret home-test results, which isn't as easy as it sounds.
Click here to read the Organic Gardening article on soil testing.
Did you know Beier's Greenhouse makes soil? We use it to pot up our fabulous flowers, and this season we're offering smaller bags for sale to our customers. The annual soil mix contains 50 percent grower's peat, 30 percent rice hulls, and 20 percent composted pine bark plus hydrated lime for pH and Epsom salt for proper nutrition. The perennial soil mix for perennials, trees and shrubs contains 50 percent composted pine bark, 30 percent grower's peat, 20 percent rice hulls, and a little sand for weight, plus hydrated lime and Epsom salt. Today's Recipe Fresh Mint Chutney Makes 2/3 cup
1 cup fresh peppermint or other mint leaves 1/4 large onion, cut into 1-inch pieces 5 tablespoons cold water 2 tablespoons fresh lime or lemon juice 2 teaspoons sugar 1/4 teaspoon coarse salt 1/8 teaspoon ground red pepper (or to taste)
Combine all ingredients in a food processor or blender. Process to a coarse puree, scraping down the sides of the bowl frequently. Cover and refrigerate, but do not keep for more than 1 day.
If you are using flavored mint leaves such as chocolate, orange, apple, etc., leave out the onion and ground red pepper. Substitute orange juice if using chocolate or orange mint, or apple juice if using apple mint. Experiment to find the right flavor balance.
