"Fireworks" Grass

Ornamental grasses are a must to complete the look of your containers and landscape beds. The bright spray of green, red, or bronze gives the eye a calming place to rest and adds height to lower growing blooms spreading underneath.

Cheap Mulch Ideas for the Veggie Garden
Mulch right around the roots of plants to save money
Mulched plants

Spend your money on more plants, not more mulch. Here are a few cheap mulch ideas to keep your vegetable garden happy.
  • Recycled newspaper or cardboard. Plain black and white newsprint is the best. Avoid colored or glossy paper. Spread sheets several layers thick between rows to reduce soil compaction and weeds and to retain moisture. Till this mulch right into the garden in the fall.
  • Free compost. The city of Grand Rapids has a wonderful composting station just off River Road as you're heading south. Look for the large black pile of dirt on the left-hand side (the river side). Better get it while it's still there--it goes fast once spring hits.
  • Sawdust. Call local lumberyards that plane their own boards and ask if you can take a load of sawdust. This is good mulch for a year or two, but sawdust can create a nitrogen shock so be sure to fertilize your veggie garden if you use a lot. Again, till into the soil in the fall.
  • Leaves and lawn clippings. Both leaves and lawn clippings are good mulch if handled properly. Allow lawn clippings to dry and spread thinly over the whole garden. Never apply lawn clippings that have herbicides on them! Shred leaves to reduce the possibility of forming a waterproof crust over the soil. It's best to compost leaves and lawn clippings before applying as mulch, but in a pinch they can be applied pre-composting.
  • Black plastic is OK in the spring to suppress weeds, but it waterproofs the soil and cuts oxygen so don't use it as regular mulch.
  • Straw. Clean, weed-free straw makes good mulch for vegetable gardens. Spread no thicker than one inch deep after your plants are well-established. Use between rows to suppress weeds and reduce compaction. Don't use hay--you'll regret it because your garden will turn into a pasture.
