This week's newsletter columns give you specifics on when to fertilize each type of garden. A decent general rule is to fertilize annual flowers and vegetables lightly about every two weeks; perennials and trees and shrubs less often. You won't get into much trouble if you do this, but there are a few tips and tricks to maximize fertilizer use in your garden.

Tips for Fertilizing Annuals
Beautiful Baskets at Beier's!
HangingBaskets

In annual garden beds, it's best to fertilize every four weeks rather than feeding a low dose each time you water (although you won't hurt your annuals if you feed frequently early in the season). Too much fertilizer causes excessive plant growth and fewer flowers--exactly the opposite of what you want in an annual garden. Keep these tips in mind for maximizing fertilizer in your annual garden beds:
  • High nitrogen later in the season causes your annuals to grow leaves at the expense of flowering. Ease off fertilizing as the summer progresses.
  • Cool season annuals like pansies and violas benefit from early fertilizing.
  • Warm season annuals (just about everything besides pansies and violas) like a drink of fertilizer about four weeks after they've been transplanted.
  • More rain or frequent irrigation increases fertilizer needs.
  • Containers and hanging baskets benefit from fertilizing every two weeks until late July.

Fertilizing Trees and Shrubs
Apply fertilizer in the entire crown area
Fertilizing a Tree

Fertilize fruit trees, berries, flowering trees, and shrubs once a year in the fall right after the first hard freeze. If you forget in the fall, very early spring when soil temperatures reach 40 degrees is also OK. Do not fertilize established plants between July and October.

Use a strong nitrogen mix where the first number is bigger (4-1-2, 3-1-2, 20-5-5, and so on). You want to apply three pounds of nitrogen per 1000 square feet, so do a little math with your mix to get the proper application amounts.

Apply the fertilizer to the surface of the ground under the entire crown area so it can filter down to the roots easily. If you can, dig a trench or hole to get the food even closer to where it's needed. You may want to place hollow spikes near your tree roots when transplanting so you can pour the liquid fertilizer deeply into the ground.

Blueberries, azalea, and rhododendron are sensitive to too much fertilizer. Use a weaker mix with these plants. Also keep in mind that if plants are growing near a lawn which is fertilized regularly, they may already be getting enough food from that source.

DO NOT use "weed and feed" lawn fertilizer mixes. The herbicides in these mixes may damage your plants.

Tips for Fertilizing Perennials
Well-fed flowers bloom happiness!
Well-fed flowers

Perennial gardens require maintenance fertilizer, but too much food causes excessive legginess and poor blooming. Applying compost mulch may provide sufficient nutrition if it's 2 to 3 inches deep. If you don't use compost, or do use wood chips, amend the soil with balanced fertilizer mixes such as 10-10-10, 5-10-10, or 5-10-5.

In the spring as soon as the ground can be worked, apply any one of these at a rate of 8 pounds per 1000 square feet of garden area. Sprinkle around the plants and work into the top 6 inches of soil without disturbing the root balls. Apply new mulch after fertilizing, and don't forget to water thoroughly.

Some perennials like extra food. Phlox, daylilies, and daisies (Rudbeckia) benefit from supplemental fertilizer every six weeks after they start coming up and through the summer.

If you grow perennials in containers, feed very lightly every three weeks and repot with good, new soil every other year in the spring.

Tips for Fertilizing Vegetables
A gorgeous veggie garden
Veggie Garden

Fertilize all veggies when you plant/transplant. Phosphorus is the important nutrient at the start and nitrogen is important for later applications. Then, use the following guidelines for a second (or third) application of fertilizer:
  • Asparagus: Before new growth begins in the spring
  • Cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli: 3 weeks after transplanting
  • Cucumber, cantaloupe, etc.: 1 week after blossoming begins AND three weeks after that
  • Peas and beans: After heavy bloom and pod set
  • Peppers and eggplant: After first fruit set
  • Greens: When plants are 1/3 grown
  • Corn: When plants are 8 inches tall AND 1 week after tassels appear
  • Tomatoes: 2 weeks before the first tomato ripens
  • Leafy vegetables need earlier nitrogen dressings than fruiting veggies.
In general, apply an extra boost of nitrogen after plants have made good growth, are starting to flower, or are setting fruit.

DO NOT fertilize watermelons and sweet potatoes. You'll lower yields and quality of harvest.

DO NOT fertilize carrots, beets, turnips, or parsnips if your soil is good to start. If you have poor soil, fertilize only when you plant/transplant.
