The Beautiful Landscape Tips for Growing Gerbera Daisies
The vibrant colors of gerbera daisies brighten all gardens! |
Such happy flowers! Gerbera daisies come in a breathtaking array of colors and make excellent cut flowers for your home or a gift. Follow these tips for successful growing in your garden: - When transplanting from the greenhouse pot, keep the top of the root ball (the crown) above the soil line. If you bury it, you'll end up with tons of foliage and no flowers.
- Grow where they will receive full sun (8 hours a day). Afternoon sun is best because gerbera daisies love the heat.
- Water deeply, then allow them to dry out somewhat between waterings. This keeps fungus and bacterial infections at bay and produces the strongest flower stems.
- Give gerberas a little air between plants. You may plant groups of three for extra color punch, but give them 12-18 inches between groups.
- Try to water underneath the plant without soaking the leaves. Water only in the morning so it has time to dry off before evening. This prevents gray mold.
- Deadhead frequently to keep your daisy blooming and clean. Use the cut flowers in a small vase.
- Use African Violet fertilizer to encourage the best blooms.

The Herbal Landscape Growing Basil: Water and Fertilizer
Strong, healthy basil is no accident | Basil is more tender than other Mediterranean herbs, so it's a little fussy about water. Keep it moist by mulching underneath in the garden, or mulching the top of the pot if you grow it in containers. Keep basil evenly moist and don't let it dry out excessively between waterings.
Plant basil in good soil and you won't need extra fertilizer. A handful of fertilizer granules in the transplanting hole will keep it adequately fed for the season. However, if you plan to harvest heavily and frequently, you may supplement with balanced fertilizer or liquid fish emulsion once a month.
Too little water and/or too much fertilizer changes the flavor of the leaves. Give your basil a little more attention than woody-stemmed herbs and you'll be eating five-star basil!
