A Quick Buzz...
Beier's Greenhouse Banner
Greetings!

With the weather so beautiful, you may be tempted to get going on the growing season. Please don't! Ideal soil temperatures for most veggies and plants are between 60 and 65 degrees, but once they sprout the air temperature can freeze them out.

Wait until our nighttime temps are more reasonable before planting anything. You won't gain much on the growing season and could lose everything if there's a cold snap. We know it's hard...

At Last... Impatiens That Thrive in the Sun!
Sunpatiens in a mass planting
sunpatiens

You rarely hear the word "sun" in the same sentence with "impatiens" unless it's someone saying, "Don't put impatiens in the sun!" Now, breeders have developed impatiens that love the sun and bloom gorgeous-colored flowers all summer long.

Aptly named Sunpatiens, these lovely plants have all the best-loved characteristics of regular, shade-loving impatiens: bright, open-faced flowers, tons of foliage, and a bushy habit perfect for hanging baskets and mass plantings in borders. And they don't mind full sun or partial shade, making Sunpatiens an excellent addition to your garden landscape.

Sage: A Little About Salvia officinalis
Sage in a mass planting
sage plants

Sage. You either love it or you hate it. Most people are familiar with the flavor of sage from Thanksgiving stuffing, but don't let that Thursday in November be the only time you break this herb out of the cabinet.

This season at Beier's we've expanded our sage collection beyond the usual common sage and we'll bring you tri-color sage, purple sage, and the brand new Hort Couture variety La Crema. Try the tri-color and La Crema sages as gorgeous foliage plants in an annual flower planting, or add purple sage to bring the landscape to life. Eat it only if you want to!

We found a nice web page from the University of Graz in Austria that describes the storied history and multiple uses of this culinary herb. Click here to read more, and be sure to add sage to your container herb garden.

Spring Pruning for Perennials
Before and After
Pruned Perennial

Developing an eye for pruning perennials is rather like learning to appreciate fine art: Studying why an artist placed a brushstroke a certain way is helpful to understanding the work of art, but sometimes you just have to stand back and look at the whole.

In other words, it's helpful to the gardener to read everything possible about pruning and to ask lots of questions, but when you're standing there on a sunny morning with the shears in your hand you simply have to feel what the garden needs. Pruning is practical, certainly, but develop your eye by looking at gardens you admire to see what makes them beautiful. Don't be afraid: pruning is a good thing.

Prune Your Trees and Shrubs Right Away!

pruning trees

We've had a shockingly early spring! (Not that we're complaining.) However, if you haven't pruned your fruit trees and shrubs yet, please get it done this weekend before the buds pop out any further.

We found an absolutely excellent article about apples, including tons of photos on how to plant, how to prune, and how to use this lovely fruit, in a 2005 issue of Country Life Magazine.

Click here to download a PDF of this article.(It's a big file so please be patient.) Country Life Magazine is a Canadian publication and has good information for "south of the border" Minnesotans. Visit their website at www.harrowsmithcountrylife.ca.

Today's Recipe
Ginger Beer
Makes 1 gallon

2-inch knob of fresh ginger
2 cups sugar
1/2 cup molasses
1 teaspoon cream of tartar
1 lemon, zest and juice
1 teaspoon active dry yeast (baking yeast, not brewer's yeast)

Bring 1 gallon water to a boil. While the water is heating, bruise the ginger by pounding it with a meat pounder, hammer, or the butt of a knife.

Combine the sugar, molasses, ginger, cream of tartar, and lemon juice and zest in a gallon sized heatproof container (try a sturdy plastic pitcher or clean bucket). Pour in the boiling water and stir well. Loosely cover with plastic wrap.

Let stand until room temperature, then stir in the yeast. Let stand at room temperature for 24 hours.

Strain the liquid through a cheesecloth or a clean kitchen towel. Bottle the beer. Ginger beer is ready to drink in three days.
