The Edible Landscape

Quick Pumpkin Tips
  • Minimum ground temp must be 50 degrees or higher.pumpkin
  • It's better to plant in late May or very early June to have pumpkins ready for Halloween.
  • Plant in hills, 4-5 seeds per hill; thin to three per hill.
  • Plant seeds 1 inch deep.
  • For vining varieties, allow six feet between hills and 10 feet between rows so they can vine at will.
  • For bush varieties, allow 3 feet between hills and 6 feet between rows.
  • For miniature varieties, allow 2 feet between hills and 6 feet between rows.
  • You may train any pumpkin up a trellis to conserve space. Fasten gently, never with wire!
  • Pumpkins will tolerate some dry, but keep them watered in the hot part of summer.
  • Please don't use insecticides unless absolutely necessary. Insecticides kill bees, which the plants need in order to pollinate properly.
  • If you must spray with poison, do it when the flowers have closed for the day and avoid spraying the flowers themselves.
  • Pumpkins are usually harvested in late September or early October. Keep in a cool (50-55 degrees), DRY place if you're waiting for Halloween.
  • Use a pruning shears to cut them from the vine, and leave 4-5 inches of vine at the top.
  • Don't worry if some of the early flowers bloom for a day and then drop off. Those are the male flowers. Only female flowers produce pumpkins.

Grilled Fish with Savory Marinade
Serves 4

4 teaspoons lemon juice
2 1/2 teaspoons dried summer savory, or 2 1/2 tablespoons fresh (winter savory may be substituted)
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1/3 cup olive oil
8 fresh fish fillets (trout, walleye, etc.)
Lemon wedges, for serving

Light the grill or preheat the broiler. In a small glass or stainless steel bowl, whisk together the lemon juice, savory, and pepper. Add the oil slowly, whisking until it emulsifies.

Put the fish fillets in a medium glass dish or stainless steel pan. Add the marinade and turn the fillets to coat. The fish may be cooked right away or marinate for no longer than 1 hour.

Grill or broil the fish 2 minutes. Turn and cook just until done, about 2 minutes longer for 1/4 inch thick fillets. Serve with lemon wedges.
