Winterizing Your Perennial Garden A couple quick things you can do this afternoon
Winterizing is very important in our climate to prevent winterkill. Your perennials will make it through the winter with flying colors if you take a few minutes to take care of them soon.
- Keep your plants well watered until the ground freezes.
- Mulch your plants when the ground starts to freeze. If you mulch too early, rodents will find your bed a wonderful winter buffet. Some of the best mulching choices are dry leaves and light straw. Just pile this over your plants to a depth of about 8 inches.
- Try not to cut perennials back too much in the fall. This helps keep the snow piled up and protects the crown of the plant from freezing. And, winter birds can eat the seeds.
See how easy that was? There's lots more you can do, so if you have specific questions, email us at beiersgreenhouse@beiersgreenhouse.com and we'll look into it. Thanks for reading!
