Cleaning Tips

  • Molded plastic items, such as booster chairs may usually be washed in the dishwasher.

  • Strollers need to be taken apart.  Fabric pieces go in the washing machine on gentle, while metal and plastic parts must be wiped down thoroughly.

  • While it is important that clothing looks and feels freshly laundered, some families with allergies prefer not to buy clothing that has been in the dryer with a dryer sheet or washed with heavy, perfumed detergent.

  • Equipment that cannot be taken apart can be washed in the bathtub or out side with the garden hose.

  • Shoes, boots and cleats need to be free of sand, mud, and odor: they can often go in the washing machine and be air-dried

The busy time is here!

What is selling the best?
What should you bring?

Are you wondering what would be the best item to bring this month?  Good, stain-free, nicer-quality Halloween costumes.  You know, the ones that your children just had to have, so you spent $30, $40, $50 for 1 night --because you're the best mom or dad ever!  :)  Well, here's your chance to get a few of those dollars back.  What does not sell well is

  • the costumes that are torn, or have runs or stains.
  • Characters that are no longer popular.
  • $12-costumes that are now missing accessories.
We have already put out well over 100 costumes, and they are selling as fast as we can put them on the racks.

Halloween Costumes
are accepted only in September

In the past, snow coats and Halloween have all been located in concentrated areas.  Now they are located with the appropriate sizes.   This is part of our effort to simplify.  We are putting snow coats and Halloween outfits out onto the racks everyday, and they are already selling fast. Halloween Costumes are located at the front of each size. Snow jackets and pants are toward the backs of each size --near the shoe and accessories wall.

We have also already put out a few Holiday dresses, sweaters and outfits.  At this point, they are located within each size, sorted by color.  After Halloween, we will move Holiday clothing to the fronts of the racks.

September30:
Last day to bring your great-condition Halloween outfits.
November 27:
Last day to bring your up-to-date, good-quality, great-condition Winter holiday outfits.

If you have more
plastic or paper
grocery or shopping bags
than you can use,
you can bring them to us to re-use! :)

               Consignors:

Call  (to be sure we can take what you have to bring)
Clean  (and take out what has stains, is not clean, or is worn)
Count  (to be sure that you bring no more than 30 items)

This is our busiest time of year!
The wait for us to look through your consignments is running between
30 minutes and one and a half hours.

We are looking for current-style, name-brand
Fall and Winter items
that will be worn in
  October/November/December.

and remember... You can bring consignments on
Monday, Wednesday, Friday or Saturday, between 9AM and 6:30PM.

We are noticing that there seems to be confusion about where to leave your consignments:

Drop 'N' Run:

  • If you are not going to return to take back the items that we do not choose to consign, please put your name and phone number securely inside the bag or box of consignments, and place your bag or box on the Drop 'n' Run shelves.  Clarification: Drop 'n' Run items get processed for sale within the week they are left with us --just like the items accepted while you wait. The only difference is that we donate the items that we do not accept.  We do make a note, on your account, of the number of items donated. (Donated items are given to The Shepherd's Fund and to the Stork Project.)

Waiting --or Returning before 7PM

  • If you do want to take back any items that we do not accept, you must check back with us before 7PM the same day that you leave your consignments in line.  We will have a receipt attached to your bag telling you how many items we did accept and why we did not accept what we are returning to you.  Please do not leave your consignments in the line if you do not intend to return for the items we did not except. Doing so will not get your items out on the floor any faster than if you leave them on the Drop 'n' Run shelves, nor will it ensure that we will take more of your items.  We follow the same rules and criteria when looking through the Drop 'n' Run bags as we do when looking at items while you wait. If you do not return before 7 the same day, your items will be given to The Shepherd Fund or The Stork Project early the next morning, because we have no room to keep them in the shop. Additionally, since you told us you are coming back for your items, we will not have any record of how many items were donated.
We appreciate your taking the time to read all of this.

A note about donating clothing:
Remember that when you donate clothing locally, you are sending them to volunteers to sort, and give to people of limited means.  If you donate an item with a broken zipper, the recipient cannot afford to pay a tailor $15 or more to replace the zipper.  If you donate clothing that is torn or badly stained, you are wasting precious volunteer time.  If you truly want your donated items to get to the hands of local needy people, be sure they are clean and wearable, as if you would be handing them personally to a  person you know who is struggling to make ends meet.
If you do not have time to sort and look over the clothing before donating it, consider placing them in a Planet Aid box.  Planet aid has paid employees to sort clothing into "grades"  some get sold to thrift shops, some get sold overseas, and some get recycled into rags, stuffing, etc.

Save time

You can help your items go from this...

incoming
Ways that you can help us to reduce...
  • the amount of time it takes to get your items out on the floor to sell
  • the length of time that you may wait for us to look through your potential consignments...
  • confusion and clutter in the consignment area
  1. Bring only the better-quality, stain-free, and in-style items (pls put unsellable items in one separate plastic grocery bag labeled "donate.")
  2. Run clothing items (that can go in the washing machine) through the washer and look them over for stains, missing buttons, broken zippers, etc before you
...to this, as quickly as possible.
    display
bring them to us. We will no look through clothing that is not clean, contains pet hairs or smells like smoke.
  3. Count to be sure that you do not bring more than 30 items for us to look through.  (Please count at home, and please include only potentially sellable items for us to look through.)
  4. Call ahead to be sure we have room for more of the items you are bringing.
  5. Remember that the time we spend looking through unwashed, outdated, or wrong-season clothing is time that we are not able to be spending properly preparing and displaying your good, sellable consignments.
  6. Review our "NeverBrands" list.  This is a list of lower-quality brands that we have noticed do not sell well at Mother & Child.  If you avoid bringing these brands you be helping to make the consignment lines move faster.
  7. If you say you are going to come back to pick up your "take back" items, please come back.
