The Size-Phenomenon at M&C
We have made an observation, over the years, about the consignment racks at Mother & Child. It is true that some sizes are always over-full and some are never full enough. What seemed strange to us, for so many years, is that it is always the same sizes year after year. We once thought that if the size 4 rack is too full this year, then likely the size 5 rack will be the over-abundant rack the following year. This seemed logical. We assumed that we simply had more consignors with children who had outgrown size 4 than any other size, that year.
This was not the case, however.... size 4 is the size that is always the most full. This has been true for 20 years. It is also been true, for 20 years, that size 7 and size 8 are the sizes that are the least full. Up to 6-months: always full. size 12+18mo: hardly ever full. (This one is easy to understand 'cause most of us received 0-6 month clothes as shower gifts, and then were on our own to buy the rest of our child's clothing.)
So... if you are not finding as large a selection for your child, as you did the year before, your child may have hit one of the sizes that isn't as abundant as some of the others. The good news is we put more clothes out on the racks every day of the week, so the key to success, may be to stop in a little more often, if you can.
In
the past snow coats and Halloween have all been located in concentrated
areas. Now they are located with the appropriate sizes. This is part
of our effort to simplify. If you do stop in more often you should be able to find everything for one size located in the same aisle. Hope you like the changes.
We have started to put out a few Halloween Costumes (They are located at the front of each size.) We have also put out a few snow jackets and pants. They are at the backs of each size.)

clothing and remember... You can bring consignments on Monday, Wednesday, Friday or Saturday, between 9AM and 6:30PM. We are noticing that there seems to be confusion about where to leave your consignments, if you are not going to wait (or return) to take back the items that we did not accept. If you are not going to return to take back the items that we do not choose to consign, please put your name and phone number securely inside the bag or box of consignments, and place your bag or box on the Drop 'n' Run shelves. Clarification: Drop 'n' Run items get processed for sale within 1 or 2 days after after they are left with us, just like the items accepted while you wait.
Ways that you can help us to reduce
- the amount of time it takes to get your items out on the floor to sell
- the length of time that you may wait for us to look through your potential consignments...
- reduce confusion and clutter in the consignment area
- Bring only the better-quality, stain-free, and in-style items (pls put unsellable items in one separate plastic grocery bag labeled "donate.")
- Run clothing items(that can go in the washing machine) through the washer and look them over for stains, missing buttons, broken zippers, etc before you bring them to us.
- Count to be sure that you do not bring more than 30 items for us to look through. (Please count at home, and please include only potentially sellable items for us to look through.)
- Call ahead to be sure you are bringing items for which we have room.
- Remember that the time we spend looking through unwashed, outdated, or wrong-season clothing is time that we are not able to be spending properly displaying your good, sellable consignments.
- Review our "NeverBrands" list. This is a list of lower-quality brands that we have noticed do not sell well at Mother & Child. If you avoid bringing these brands you be helping to make the consignment lines move faster.
- If you have 5 or 10 clothing items that you just want out of your house, but are on the neverbrands list or have small stains, you may put them in a plastic grocery bag labeled "donate" and we will give you a receipt for the donation.
We appreciate your taking the time to read all of this.
A note about donating clothing: Remember that when you donate clothing locally, you are sending them to volunteers to sort, and give to people of limited means. If you donate an item with a broken zipper, the recipient cannot afford to pay a tailor $15 or more to replace the zipper. If you donate clothing that is torn or badly stained, you are wasting precious volunteer time. If you truly want your donated items to get to the hands of local needy people, be sure they are clean and wearable, as if you would be handing them personally to a person you know who is struggling to make ends meet. If you do not have time to sort and look over the clothing before donating it, consider placing them in a Planet Aid box. Planet aid has paid employees to sort clothing into "grades" some get sold to thrift shops, some get sold overseas, and some get recycled into rags, stuffing, etc.

Thank
you, again for your responses to our survey. We have heard, loud
and clear, that you are shopping for the top quality items at bargain
prices. Additionally, the down economy has caused large retailers
to react by offering products at unheard-of, low prices. In response
to these two factors, we are in the process of adapting our policies. We
are increasing our standards for quality and for condition, with 2
goals in mind 1. to make it easier for you to shop in racks that are
not too crowded; and 2. to give your quality consignments a better
opportunity to sell for more money.
