Mother & Child is 20 years old!

Do you remember?

The 700 square foot shop, in the far, left corner of Amherst Plaza, with a Little tikes playhouse and plastic slide shaped like an elephant for the kids to play. Keara and Lee were a baby and a toddler. Next door was the Consignment Gallery. Keara and Vicki's son, Ryan often played out on the patio to the left of our shop. Soupçon was the popular 100% cotton brand of baby clothing, and Nikky® was the brand of diaper cover that we sold.

The 1100 square foot shop on your right as you drove straight into the parking lot of Amherst Plaza? We no longer had the slide, because we needed the floor space for racks of clothing. The playhouse still had it's door and it's telephone, and the kitchen sink, though. Keara and Lee were often found over at Amherst House of Pizza or Naji and Rosie's daughter, Odile was playing at Mother & Child with the girls. Flapdoodles and Cow + Lizard were the popular brands of the day.

The Nashua Shop, first on W. Pearl Street, then where Swan Chocolates currently is, on Main Street. Karen became very involved in Downtown Revitalization, and Downtown Nashua became Keara and Lee's new "neighborhood." They would walk to Martha's for rock candy, and the other shop owners would report to me as they watched them safely walk by. When we moved to Main Street, the girls spent much of their time running up to the Library for more books to read. Organic cotton clothing was beginning to be more affordable. Greeen Babies was one of the first organic cotton brands at Mother & Child.

The 2200 square foot shop in Amherst Plaza. We eventually closed the Downtown shop, and consolidated the 2 shops into yet a third location within the same plaza. As Keara and Lee grew, so did the size-range that we carried, of course. We expanded to carry "big kids" clothing and even some teen clothing. Remember the "something special" closet? Here is where we displayed the "boutique brand" clothing. We even added some retail lines for pre-teens. At-ti-tudes was a brand we sold for several years.

The move to our current 8000 square foot location? As we watched Pk's Landscaping, and so many other smaller businesses close or move to make room for the 'big box" stores that were moving on to Amherst Street, we knew we had to find a space where we could have room to grow, and not worry about being "kicked out" by a mega store. We found this perfect location in Greystone Plaza and took a leap of faith that we would soon grow into it. We did not imagine, at the time, that we could possibly outgrow this space! Here is where our teen department really took off. It is now our busiest department, and it is where you will often find teen children of parents who remember shopping in our original location. Keara and Lee are now both living in Boston. Keara has her own shop(see below), and Lee works at Mother & Child on the weekends and during school vacations. Karen is re-married and her step-daughter, Veronica has been a full-time employee for several years. Alternative Apparel is by far our best-selling brand. This is the location, where we finally added a Women's Clothing department.

This is the last week of our birthday month!!

Mondays in February:
10AM - 1PM we'll keep the little ones occupied while you shop! We'll have snacks and some activities ready for ages 1-6.

Tuesdays in February:
20 % off retail breastfeeding, pregnancy, baby-wearing, and diapering purchases for new parents or parents-to-be. Just show us a picture of your child(ren.)

Wednesdays in February:
Look for our 20th Birthday coloring contest on our website and Facebook page. Parents may print the picture, and have their child between 3 and 8 years of age color it. Each Wednesday in February we will accept entries, and choose 1 to win a grab bag of toys. Winners will be notified by the following Thursday afternoon.

Thursdays in February:
Show us a picture of your mother to receive 20% off your purchase of retail toys.

Fridays in February:
are Date Nights! Parents: enjoy wine and cheese while you shop
5:30 - 7:00 PM on Fridays in February.

On Friday the 26th, as part of our birthday celebration: We will have a special performance by Dini, Cher impersonator at 6PM!!
