As we enter the new year, we are ...simplifying...
We know that times are stressful, and so we are working hard to be sure that your visits to Mother & Child are a pleasant and easy experience.
In the retail area, we have begun painting our display fixtures so that they will all be either natural wood or the same, beautiful green as the walls; and we are making small signs, throughout the store, to tell you more info about our products, and their origins.
You may have already noticed that we have a new music service that allows us to play popular music (that has been pre-screened for inappropriate language) throughout the store.
In the consignment merchandise area, we have moved the bedding and decor items closer to the appropriate-age clothing racks.
Consignors: We have re-arranged the back room to make consignment-intake days less congested, and more efficient.
We even fixed the front door and the garage door so that they are easier to open. :) We have many more ideas about how to make your visit to Mother & Child a relaxing experience, and we look forward to hearing your ideas and feedback.

As we enter our third decade, we are ...Reviving...
Mother & Child is about to turn 20 years old! The original vision for Mother & Child included natural alternatives, building community, and supporting smaller manufacturers and home-based companies, who adhere to above-average employment and sustainability practices.
During our teen years, we experimented with many products and sold some that were not true to our original mission.
We feel that the market for more natural, fair-trade, USA-made and hand-made has grown significantly in the past few years, and so we feel confident that we can revive our original mission statement and be more true to it, as we enter out Third decade in business.
Tammy has been doing some research and has so many great new products in mind for you! As you visit us throughout the rest of the Winter, you will see some truly unique, and well made products from smaller companies who care about community and the environment as much as you do.
We are very excited to see your reaction to these products, as they arrive throughout the Spring. Here is a photo of our original shop in Amherst, in 1990!

As we have grown to a company with over 20 employees we are ...Recycling...
Yes, we have always been about recycling clothing, and shopping bags, and more, but we are making it a goal, in 2010, to reduce our waste by 75% over the year.
We have created a "Green Team" Led by Alyssa and Tory. They conducted a "trash sort" yesterday, and are working with the rest of our staff to create a list of specifc goals that will help to reduce the amount of waste that we send to the landfill. We will keep you posted as the the progress of this project throughout the year. Read all about his on Facebook.
We are also encouraging "upcycling" (See the previous issue of this newsletter or just Google "upcycling" for more info.) My daughter, Lee, has decoupaged some furniture; we have a young artist, named Anna, who hand-decorates egg shells; we are ordering a line of fun, stuffed dolls made from recycled sweaters; and we are asking some of our current hand-made consignors to consider upcycling beads and other used objects to make new, useful products.
We know you are going to love this! |
Consignors:
- Call (to be sure we can take what you have to bring)
-
Clean (and take out what has stains, or is worn)
-
Count (to be sure that you bring no more than 30 items)
It's simple!
In January we will be looking for clothing that will be worn in March and April.
We will accept Spring, and layering items as well as some cruise-wear. Spring includes light-weight, long-sleeved and Easter outfits. We do not accept Summer items such as sundresses, tank tops and shorts until March. We do accept better quality, swim wear for swim teams and lessons, all year round. Please wait until March to bring bikinis, and beach-wear. Now is also a good time to start bringing Spring sports accessories such as soccer and baseball cleats and clothing. It is time to bring Prom dresses. Please note that we will only accept dresses purchased in the past 2 years by teens for proms and semi-formal dances. We will NOT be able to accept dated prom dresses or past bride's maids gowns, as they just do not sell.
Visit www.mothersays.com where you will find links to details about "Cruise-wear" and "upcycling" and more.
