Angels with Attitude!

angel         angel red

These angels are handmade in South Africa, by school children:
These students live in an area of Northern Zululand where the AIDS epidemic is very high and are themselves orphans who have been left destitute. The purchase of this item impacts the student directly assisting them to feed, clothe and educate themselves and at the same time giving them a sense of pride and self-worth. Ilala Weavers is situated at Hluhluwe within the province of KwaZulu Natal South Africa. The organizations was established some 30 years ago with a clear vision and objective of revitalizing and enhancing the age-old Zulu tradition of handcrafts which at the time were in danger of being lost forever. Today Ilala Weavers helps over 2000 Zulu people both men and women to attain self sufficiency by working from their homes and therefore retaining their lifestyle and rich heritage which has been passed down through the generations by Zulu crafters whose modern counterparts today produce stunning works of art sought after the world over.

This down economy has us all trying to save money, but we suggest that our local economy will benefit if more people in our community make it a goal to do some of their shopping at locally-owned establishments* and to pay full price for at least a few gifts.**

*According to the 3/50 Project, for every $100 spent at locally-owned establishments, $68 returns to the local community through taxes, payroll and other local purchases.  $100 spent at national chain stores yields $48 for the local community and $100 spent on the Internet gives nothing to the local economy.
** The average wage for retail workers [in a community] is 10% lower than it would have been without Wal-Mart's presence. [Arindrajit Dube, T. William Lester, and Barry Eidlin, "A Downward Push: The Impact of Wal-Mart Stores on Retail Wages and Benefits," 2007] Consider, too the workers involved in the manufacture and distribution of each product that you purchase, and can they possibly be getting a living wage if you always insist on paying a discounted price?  If local shops continue to have to compete with big box discounting, employees of local shops will face pay cuts and job loss.
