We, at Mother & Child are thankful for you, our good friends! We hope you are spending this holiday weekend with people you cherish.
Come to Mother & Child to find unique gifts with meaning.
Our goal is to be able to offer the best selection of unique and environmentally-responsible gifts for this holiday season. Stop in and ask us questions about our products. We are proud to talk about them, and we will give you a free "Gifts with Meaning" Greeting card when you purchase a fair-trade or locally-made gift, this season.
We are open on Friday 10-7 and offer the following ideas to those of you who are not inclined to get caught up in the frenzy of Black Friday:
- Stay home, in the early Morning and have breakfast with your family, or go out to that local breakfast spot that you never have time to visit.
- During Breakfast, map out your holiday shopping to involve the most efficient route, with the least amount of lights and traffic. If possible choose shopping destinations that allow you to walk from one spot to another before returning to your car. (Scroll down in this newsletter for gifts within walking distance of Mother & Child.)
- This down economy has us all trying to save money, but we suggest that our local economy will benefit if more people in our community make it a goal to do some of their shopping at locally-owned establishments* and to pay full price for at least a few gifts.**
*According to the 3/50 Project, for every $100 spent at locally-owned establishments, $68 returns to the local community through taxes, payroll and other local purchases. $100 spent at national chain stores yields $48 for the local community and $100 spent on the Internet gives nothing to the local economy. ** The average wage for retail workers [in a community] is 10% lower than it would have
been without Wal-Mart's presence. [Arindrajit Dube, T. William Lester,
and Barry Eidlin, "A Downward Push: The Impact of Wal-Mart Stores on Retail Wages and Benefits," 2007]
Consider, too the workers involved in the manufacture and distribution of each product that you purchase, and can they possibly be getting a living wage if you always insist on paying a discounted price? If local shops continue to have to compete with big box discounting, employees of local shops will face pay cuys and job loss.

Green Toys: Made from Milk Jugs!
Green Toys are 100% made in the USA. To be more specific, they are
produced in California, a state known for strict toy safety and
environmental laws. It's cool to buy USA,
but also think about this: transportation is one of the biggest
contributors to greenhouse gasses. We all know driving less is good for
mother nature, but did you ever think about how many miles a toy logs
before it ends up in your local store? Every step in the process, from milk
container recycling to toy production to final assembly, occurs in
California.
Sprig Toys: Made from Reclaimed Wood and Recycled Plastic!

The playful, cartoon-like designs of our chunky vehicles make them
irresistible to preschoolers, and parents love the eco-friendly,
battery-free, paint-free, kid-powered construction. Recommended for ages 3 and up.
