You can see some of these girls at Boston.com, as well, because they were first in line to see the midnight premier in Boston, on Tuesday!

Consignment News

Consignment update for July:
Here is the news about what soooooooooooooooooooooooooo............................. many of you have been asking us for:

We are CONSIDERING the possibility of adding adult clothing to our mix of consignment product offerings. As a (maybe temporary) expiriment, we would like to put out a quiet call for women's clothing, amongst you, our newsletter readers.  As you are very well aware, we have limited space, so we are going to adhere to strict guidelines --from the get-go-- in order to narrow down the amount and the types of items that we will accept:
  • must be in-style (this means you bought it within the past 2 years OR you bought it 25+ years ago, and it is BACK in style.  :))
  • must be in like-new condition (ok, it may be OK to buy your 4-year-old a pair of pants which have a slight stain or may have knees that are somewhat worn, but an adult is going to require anything anything that he or she will purchase will look like new.)
  • must be good quality.  Our concept is one of recycling.   Poorly-made clothing, or really-inexpensive items, will not last long enough to be used again and again.
If you have in-style, Early Fall items, in women's sizes, we will love to look through up to 30 items and to keep, display and sell those that we think have the best chance of selling.  I am repeating that this is a relatively quiet expiriment, and ask that you bee choosey about who you tell.   :)

Re: children's and materntiy items:
We are accepting items that will be worn in September and October:
such as light-weight clothing and accessories, and in colors that work for Fall.  That is, items that can be worn in layers during the early Fall days that can range from 50 degrees to 80 degrees.  It is too early for turtle necks, wool, corduroy, and flannel.

Reminder:  we accept Halloween items ONLY IN SEPTEMBER, and we do not accept any holiday or snow items until after September 1st.  Between now and September, we concentrate on getting the shcool-age children (kidergarten to college) clothed for the first few months of school.

Speaking of college kids... We have designated an area in the back-room decor department, to dorm-room decor. Now is the time to bring like-new bedding and decor for dorm life.

Below is a list to use as a guide as to what we can take in July. We suggest that you always call ahead to confirm, as during a given week, we may have too much in  a particular size.

capris, long shorts, and skirts
long shorts for boys
light-weight tops (long and short sleeve) that are nice enough and "OK" to where to school (and colors that are good for Fall)
light-weight dresses (no velour or holiday-looking dresses yet.  :) )
rain coats and brand-name hoodies
sneakers and sandals
school uniforms (bring the short sleeves and shorts first, it will still be OK to bring the long pants and long sleeves in August.)
fleece and rain jackets (no winter jackets, yet)  Note: denim jackets mostly don't sell
baby clothing will basically follow the same guidelines. (long-sleeved, long pants, but not corduroy, velour, and such.))
Decor for dorm rooms
Thank you for taking the time to read this.  We look forward to seeing you.
We have room for more...
baby swings

Get to know the Girls!!!
By Persia Asvaraksh

Summer has finally arrived!  Sure the sun seems to be the last one to know but we think this time off from school should be spent getting to know your friends...the friendly staff at Mother and Child that is.  Sure you know that Susie always has a smiling face at the register and Kelley is always busy in that backroom, but do you know their hidden talents?  We will take time every week to introduce each of our staff to you over the summer.  Not only will we be sharing fun facts about ourselves, but we'll share our shopping tips as well! If you ask us, we might be the store's best customers, and as different as we are, we all seem to find something to spend our paychecks on!  After reading our introductions, please feel free to come say hello.  We'd love to talk if you also loved the Twilight series, and even better we'd love to help you shop!

Introducing Maureennatural wood
Ask any of the young girls here at Mother and Child who they want to be when they grow up and 9 times out of 10, they'll say Maureen.  She's always cheerful and seems to genuinely enjoy everything she does.  After raising three wonderful children and being a grandmother of four, she has gained a wealth of knowledge on children and parenting.  She lives with her husband, John, and enjoys being outside and playing with her grandkids.  She loves being active and spends her time swimming, hiking, and playing baseball.  Although she is the first to strikes up conversation at work, she's more likely to get strikes at her bowling league!  She might also be one of our greenest employees.  Not only is she a dedicated recycler, but she frequently bikes to work and can be seen biking around town too.  You'll know it's her by the basket in front.  We love having our very own Angela Lansbury at Mother and Child!  Her happiness is contagious, and we promise that after talking to her, you'll find yourself leaving with a smile.

Fun facts about Maureen!
Of all the jobs you have had, which was your favorite? Your least favorite?
I didn't like my job when I was sixteen, I ran the meat department at the supermarket!  But, I do love working at Mother and Child.  The customers are so different than the mall atmosphere I worked in for 15 years.
How would you describe your perfect day?
I would drive to the beach with John in our old BMW convertible, enjoying the sunshine.  Listening to the oldies radio station of course!
Some parenting advice for our shoppers?
Parents need to be consistent in the way they discipline their children, but more importantly, always parent with your heart.

If you could live the life of any person who would it be?
Katherine Hepburn, she was so ahead of her time!

When you were a little kid, what did you want to do when you grew up?
I got what I wanted because I wanted to be married to the perfect man, raise a family and live in a house with a white picket fence!  Honest!

If you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Potato chips! And the real ones, not baked!

What is your personal philosophy in 7 words or less?
Happiness comes from within

How do you shop at Mother and Child?
I get all my gifts here!  I buy the used books for my grandkids, they love to read and it's a great price.  I also like the organic baby clothes for baby showers.  They are a special gift for new babies!

What is your product pick at Mother and Child?
The rocket balloons!  Whenever I bring them to a children's party, I am the hero!

Money-saving ideas from customers and employees at Mother & Child:simple thrift

Tip of the week:

Save the date!  Wendy Thomas of "Simple Thrift"  will join us at Mother & Child on July 31st to tell us her  list of "Thrifty Tools I Can't Live Without."  She will be in the shop at 6PM and will talk for about a half hour.  She promised to bring a "thrifty snack"  made by her children!  We'll serve some cheese and crackers, too!
