Greetings!

Hello! Spring is here!!
Earth Day is coming and to create awareness, we will ask the children that visit Mother & Child next week, to draw, on brown grocery bags, something about protecting the Earth. The artists will receive a sticker and then we will use the bags for purchases made during the week of April 20 to the 25th. Click here to see what 1 World Trading Co. is doing for Earth Day 2009.
Speaking of saving the planet.... I would love to take a minute to brag about my Husband's contribution to a very cool event that happened last weekend. The Nashua Soup Kitchen and Shelter's 16th annual race/walk was the first-ever "green" athletic event in NH! 1 World Trading Co. helped them achieve this by contributing compostable bags, plates, nakpins, soy-waxed paper and cups! The end result was that less than 12 lbs of trash went to the landfill, at the end of the day. The rest was able to be composted or recycled! read more... This was a very impressive undertaking and I commend and applaud the Soup Kitchen staff and race organizers for doing it!! What a great example!!!
Brain Quest finally arrived!
We still have some beautiful prom and semi-formal dresses -spread the word to your friends that they can save loads of money and have a fabulous dress! Click here to look at a slide show of some of our dresses.
Call us at 603 886 6727for your 10 minute appointment(s): Portraits in Silhouette will return to Mother & Child on Saturday, April 18! The Mother & Daughter team are scaling back their portrait event hours and so this will likely be their only date at Mother & Child before Mother's Day. They have made so many parents happy. The likenesses that they create are amazing and they do it with black paper and a pair of scissors! There is no lighting or tracing involved. Please call us at 603 886 6727 to set up a ten-minute appointment for each child.

April Product Highlight: Why buy used?

Reduce and Reuse One
way to keep your clothing dollars from enriching companies that use
sweatshops is simply to buy less clothing overall. When you're
considering a clothing purchase, ask yourself whether you really need
the item.
Secondhand clothing is a great option for
people who want to avoid supporting sweatshops-and for people who are
budget-minded and eco-conscious, too. Check your local Yellow Pages for
thrift or consignment stores, and check your local paper for listings
of yard sales featuring clothing. You can also organize a clothing swap
in your office or community.
When purchasing necessary,
new items, look for clothing that you'll be able to wear over and over
again. Choose high-quality items that fit your personal style, and then
care for them properly so they last. http://www.coopamerica.org/pubs/realmoney/articles/nosweatshops.cfm

Sharing Ideas
Money-saving ideas from customers and employees at Mother & Child:
Tip of the week: This one is for parents of athletes and sports fans. We have the gear, the shirts and more! We have seen several Red Sox and baseball-theme shirts in all sizes, recently. Baseball and the soccer cleats are stocked. We even have shirts for some of the local sports leagues.

Blackle was created by Heap Media to remind us all of the need to take small steps in our everyday lives to save energy. Blackle seaches are powered by Google Custom Search. http://www.blackle.comBlackle saves energy because the screen is predominantly black.
"Image displayed is primarily a function of the user's color settings
and desktop graphics, as well as the color and size of open application
windows; a given monitor requires more power to display a white (or
light) screen than a black (or dark) screen." Roberson et al, 2002
In January 2007 a blog post titled Black Google Would Save 750 Megawatt-hours a Year
proposed the theory that a black version of the Google search engine
would save a fair bit of energy due to the popularity of the search
engine. Since then there has been skepticism about the significance of
the energy savings that can be achieved and the cost in terms of
readability of black web pages.
We believe that there is value in the concept because even if the
energy savings are small, they all add up. Secondly we feel that seeing
Blackle every time we load our web browser reminds us that we need to
keep taking small steps to save energy. The HOLISTIC MOMS NETWORK
proudly presents... "Vermicomposting for the Health of your Garden and Yard"
with Chester Mandrik of Yard Spice Organics
Healthy soil is
alive. Vermicompost is the end-product of
the breakdown of organic matter by various species of earthworm. Containing water-soluble nutrients, microbes,
and bacteria; vermicompost is an excellent, nutrient-rich organic fertilizer
and soil conditioner. Compared to
ordinary soil, the worm castings contain five times more nitrogen, seven times
more phosphorus and 11 times more potassium. They are rich in humic acids and
improve the structure of the soil. Join Chester Mandrick for
this informative talk and learn how
to do vermicomposting for the enhancement and enrichment of your home garden.
