Greetings!

Hello!

New this week:
More Alternative Apparel arrived today, and... good news... we got it at a discount and so you will get it at a discount! This line has been so popular.  It is affordable, very cool, and it is incredibly comfortable!

We also received more Sassy wooden toys and feeding products and more Badger products! BTW: Badger is made in NH!

Save the date...
Portraits in Silhouette will return to Mother & Child on Saturday, April 18!  The Mother & Daughter team are scaling back their portrait event hours and so this will likely be their only date at Mother & Child before Mother's Day.
They have made so many parents happy.  The likenesses that they create are amazing and they do it with black paper and a pair of scissors!  There is no lighting or tracing involved.
Please call us at 603 886 6727 to set up a ten-minute appointment for each child.

March Product Highlight: Bamboo

From the Spun Bamboo website:bamboo
"While the creation of Spun Bamboo fiber seems to have mystified a few and even spurred some erroneous reports on how bamboo fiber is manufactured, the process is really quite simple. The bamboo culms can be pulped through a process of mechanical combing, and/or baths of sodium hydroxide. These processes are completely closed, which means that the release of byproducts into the environment is negligible. The chemicals involved are good chemicals compared to the truly dangerous ones used to produce cotton and polyester. Sodium hydroxide is reactive but it is not toxic, i.e. it does not cause DNA damage, does not enter the food chain and is short lived because of its reactivity. It is easily neutralized into salt and water. Furthermore sodium hydroxide is used as a washing agent for almost all organic cotton textiles and is certified by the global organic textile standards. The proof of the ecologically sound methods behind bamboo production is the fact that all Spun Bamboo fabric is certified under OekoTex Standard 100, which has become the best known and most successful label for textiles tested for harmful substances.

Mechanical breakdown of the bamboo results in a fiber much more like linen and has properties like linen only silkier. No real chemical processing, however benign is necessary.

At this point in time, we source our bamboo from China because that is where the bamboo plantations are and the only place in the world with the factories that have the know how to produce high quality bamboo fiber. We believe that by introducing this fantastic, renewable material to the general public here and abroad, we will be educating others about bamboo and inspire the growth of more bamboo in the U.S. and around the globe. In order for farmers to start growing bamboo as a cash crop where historically it has not (i.e. the US) requires them to see a strong demand for products made from bamboo."

Sharing Ideas
Money-saving ideas from customers and employees at Mother & Child:

Last week's tip was about buying recycled Disney tees, PJs, etc at M&C before you head to Disney for April vacation.  We created a "wall of Disney" above the shoe wall, to make it easy for you.

Tip of the week:
This one is for parents of high school seniors and juniors:
We have a fantastic collection of prom dresses that were $80 to $450 last year or the year before, but are $30 to $150 now at Mother & Child!

Trying to avoid pesticides, but can't always find organic produce?

EWG has created a nice, pocket-size guide to buying non-organic produce: which fruits and veggies are generally grown with lots of pesticides and which do not require much pesticide  use:

Wanna join a CSA,
but don't have time to work or even do a weekly pick-up?

Ben Brewster, of the Soccer Farm in Amherst has a solution for us:
You can have your share of each weekly harvest delivered to Mother & Child, and pick it up here on pick-up day.  Not sure if  pick-up day will be Tuesday again this year.  We will wait until the season is closer to confirm.  If you want to give this a try, but don't know if you'll be able to use up the veggies/fruit each week, try splitting a share with a neighbor.  This is an affordable way to give it a try and you can take turns picking up your food!
You can visit http://www.bbsoccer.com/farm/  for more info and for shareholder pricing.

To become a Garden Shareholder - please register and pay in full by April 1st: http://www.bbsoccer.com/pdfs/2009-SoccerFarm.pdf
